#10 - Nice Day with Harvest Home

I really believe that every quilt tells a story - well this quilt has a long story. Go ahead grab something to drink - I'll wait. :-)
*
Comfy? Here we go.......................
*
When I was planning and buying fabric to make all the quilts I tried not to be a copy cat and make the quilts like the ones in the book. However, I really like Carrie's small Schnibbles quilt made with Harvest Home by Moda so I asked her if she would mind if I copied. She didn't mind one bit; in fact she gave me the layer cakes I needed. WooHoo! :-)
*
I was fat, dumb and happy as I was separating and cutting the layer cakes. Deep in my stash I found a fabulous background tone on tone from an older Blackbird Designs line that I knew would work nicely. I did a quick read through the instructions, started cutting and made four blocks - wahoo!!!! It suddenly occurred to me that I needed to set aside all the blue prints to use in the setting triangles. I was now ready to sew like the wind - I piled four layer cakes and made the first diagonal cut and then a second diagonal cut - screeeeeeeeccccccccccccccchhhhhh - there wasn't suppose to be a second diagonal cut. ACK!!!!! I sewed the halves back together hoping that they would work - they did. Whew!
*
Wait, what's that yardage sitting on the end of my cutting table? OH NO!!!!! That's the background fabric I was going to use for the 1/2 square triangles forgetting I didn't have enough of the one from Blackbird Designs - OMG, OMG, I've already made four blocks - ACK!!!
*
At this point I'm no longer feeling fat, dumb & happy - just FAT & DUMB! It's very obvious that the Quilting Gods are punishing me! Why? I don't know! :-)
*
I refused to be deterred - onward!!! I made # blocks with the first background print and used the other one for the final 8 blocks. Not sure I like them together but that's the way it is.
*
I got all the blocks laid out on my design wall. I needed to cut and sew the setting & corner triangles. I grabbed the blue layer cakes ready to start cutting - I needed 14 but I only had 13!!! OH NO! Feeling very FAT & DUMB - what did I do to anger the Quilting Gods? Huge Sigh!!!
*
Again I refused to be deterred - onward!!! I went digging deep and found a piece of blue Blackbird Designs fabric - not an exact match but I settled. Sigh!!!
*
It's far from perfect but it's finished. :-)
*
This was going to be the final Big Schnibble because I thought it would be fun to wish you a Nice Day. It just didn't feel right so here it is. LOL
*
There are several morals to this story but I'm sure you already know what they are. LOL
*
If you've read through this entire post - thank you! LOL The parade continues tomorrow - see you then.
*
In Friendship!

I am enjoying the Schnibblemania. I can't wait to see the next quilt. Your last quilt looks great despite the problems you had with your fabric. It's not a mistake it's a new creative design that makes your quilt one of a kind.

You must be the queen of schnibbles, I'm amazed at how many you've done and they all turned out great.

Darlene this is another beauty! WOW! You persevered through this one...I love that you kept going and made it work! It's just beautiful and it's YOURS!

Yup, I read the whole post, and it didn't even take me one sip of the coffee I poured reading your intro *lol*

Sounds like you had some trouble along the way on this one, but hey, the top is done, it is absolutely beautiful, and you have a great story to tell each time someone asks you about this quilt!

...you know I'm really tempted to be a copy cat, seeing this one... I absolutely love Carrie's little one, and your large one... think maybe I'll go layer cake shopping later on *lol* You don't mind, do you?

Oh, and since I haven't left any comments on your previous Schnibblemania posts, I just have to say I really enjoy them! And look forward to the next :o)

It looks perfectly fine to me, Darlene. Had you not told us the entire story, I'm sure we'd be none the wiser and though that's your interpretation of the design.

I think your quilting gods are a little fatigued because that's what happens to me when my quilting faeries get tired. *wink*

I don't know how you're doing it but all I can say is...continue to GO GIRL!

That quilt looks wonderful! Another job well done! :-)
I know how you feel regarding the Quilting gods! I had the same with one of my quilts. In the end, I still love the quilt and use it every day (mistakes or not!). Like you said - now the quilt has a story, and that makes it more interesting and special!!!

Darlene,

You are still my hero for making one Schnibble a week. I love looking at your work and will make one of my own very soon.

bad hair day huh, but my that quilt still looks pretty darn good to me,you look like you are having some fun there despite those fatigued quilting gods...

OH my quilting Hero, do not be discouraged by the bumps the 'Quilting Gods' are putting in your path, just jump over them or step around them and all will be well! Your newest Schnibble is beautiful...keep them coming! (no pressure, lol). You truly amaze me Darlene, I don't know how you do it. I can just see you, spinning in a circle like 'wonder woman' big pin cushions on each wrist...then, when you have transformed into "Wonder Quilter", you dash to your sewing machine and nothing can stop you!!!

I made Nice Day as a Schnibble and gave it to a friend. I have it on the front of my blog to the right. I do however...have more charms set aside for mine! I worry I will also mess up because I haven't any spare....You see...I too mess up and always say to myself, "and you call yourself a quilter?" Laugh it off after initial panic.
I wasn't picking a favorite....but Nice Day is it for me.

It's beautiful Darlene! If you hadn't mentioned the issues you had, nobody would have ever noticed! :0)

LOL *points and snickers*

Who loves ya babe?! You're still a quilting superhero in my book! It's good to know that I'm not the only who's brain mutinie's when they're quilting.

Thanks for confessing you are not the perfect Quilting Goddess I was starting to think you are! I feel so much better when I do things like that when I know other people do too!

Well, had you not shared your story I'd never quess there was a supstitution anywhere. And I must tell you honestly, I'm so glad to know I'm not the only one who has made the 2nd diagonal cut when only 1 was required!
It's a beautfiul quilt and I love those colors.

So beautiful and I have had several moments like you had. All of your quilts are gorgeous.

The quilt is beautiful and sometimes the ones that cause us the most grief are the ones we love most in the end. We've all had those days when the quilting gods seems to be mad at us. LOL

LOOOOve it!! And your cute story.

SO glad to know that I am not the only one who does this kind of thing! I often post my "creative adjustments" a.k.a. my mistakes on my Saturday Sampler blocks. When you look back you can't believe you did that, but at the time...I guess we get into a quilt trance and forget what the heck we're doing sometimes!!!
Turned out fabulous...just like you meant to do all those adjustments!!

I think it must be some jinx to do with the name because my Nice Day was a calamity of errors too. LOL I'm glad you persevered~ its lovely! :-) Have a happy day!

But you finished!!!! Enjoy your completion with a big bowl of chocolate ice cream and move on to the next!

What an ordeal!! But what results!!
Love this one. I will admit that this one was on my list of MUST make from the book and I almost made it with the Collection for a Cause line that I'm using for Short Story but the setting triangles killed my idea of using the fat Eighth bundle I had. This gave me too much time to think about this one and I found it resembled Elizabeth (another Miss Rosie pattern - Didn't you make a version of Elizabeth?) and I REALLY want to make that one. So I held off on finding the right fabric for Nice Day and it has fallen off my list... I love that fabric choice though. It's just gorgeous!

I did read thru the entire post and it makes me feel better to know that we all get detoured sometimes. The show has been wonderful. Now you have to quilt them !!!!

You rock, Darlene? And so do your quilts.

Darlene, you have another beautiful quilt and a great story to go with it. I'm still enjoying this wonderful parade.

Shelina (formerly known as Shasta) said...

So sorry you had so many problems. I think the moral of the story is that you should be willing to mix and match and switch and use scraps. The quilt is beautiful.

*karendianne. said...

What a story! Whew. I love reading it and LOVE THE QUILT all the more for it. You are strong and pushed on through it. Wow. That's what really matters to me. Impressive. The quilt and you.

Darlene, I think we all have quilting days like this. You didn't give up and have a gorgeous top to prove it. Good for you. Winona

Carol said...

It's beautiful Darlene and just perfect with Harvest Home fabrics. You are one of the most amazing quilters I have ever met, nothing you can't tackle and your quilts are ever so lovely. We all have had similar experiences and we improvise and make it work.

Loving your parade and never ever bored.

QuiltSue said...

Well, if you don't like it, I know of a house in the UK where it would look great, teehee. Seriously I think the whole thing looks lovely, subtle and calm with the fabrics you used.

Hi Darlene!
I'm sorry you've had some trouble with this quilt - the error with the cutting & mis-counting the needed setting triangles could be so me ;o).
Although you said you weren't that in love with the two background fabrics - I think the quilt wins interest with this variety. I really like it!
Julia

The trouble you had certainly didn't hurt the quilt -- it's beautiful. I love that fabric line and the subtle colors. I'm going to be so sad when the Schnibbles show is over.

Becky said...

Don't you just hate quilting days where ever step forward is two steps backwards. I am so impressed that you finished your top. I would have just shoved it in a box and hide it:)

Linda said...

This quilt looks great even though it was a challenge for you. I always say done is better than perfect. If you hadn't told us this great story, we would never have been the wiser. Your Schnibbles are looking great. Keep 'em coming.

Darlene - it looks beautiful. I have to tell you, I'm glad I'm not the only one this stuff happens to when quilting o:) Hugs!

Kelly@ Charming Chatter said...

Oh Darlene - despite all the troubles, you made a gorgeous quilt! I just love it - and kuddos to you for sticking it through! I think your brain was probably just a bit fried from all that cutting and stitching (smile)! Wish I could make such beauties when those things happen to me!!
