BASIC SEWING KIT
This is my sewing box that I take with me when I go sew with my friends or on a retreat. It used to hold some very basic items and slowly over the years I've added many, many things. I got to the point that I purchased duplicates of many things in my sewing room because I got tired of "forgetting" something. That grew old very quickly. :-)
I started with a regular sized plastic pencil box and then upgraded to this larger one as I kept adding stuff.
So, why am I showing it to you? I need your help - I don't like this thing but I've searched high and low for something better, cuter, prettier, etc and can't find anything. I have lots of cute Longaberger baskets but they don't work for travel (everything spills out).
What do you use? What do you recommend? I need your ideas and thoughts, please!
By the way, I thought "it" might be coming today but "it" won't be coming till either tomorrow or Sunday! Stay tuned. teehee

Well I use a soft case that I can carry over my shoulder. I bought it several years ago and there are large, medium and small pockets that close with a zipper. You can even add extra pocket "pages" to the case as needed. The pockets hold scissors, rotary cutters, thread, needles, etc...
I have thought about getting one of those rolling tool boxes but that would take up even more room that I don't have...LOL
So you are teasing us with what this "it" may be....Guess I'll just have to keep checking back :)
I can't give you any better idea, dear..... but I see such a cute, cute, little tin box, with sewing items on it ! How lovely ! Did you buy it online ?
I'm sure "IT" will come tomorrow. Anyway, we know that you'll show "IT", as soon as "IT" reaches your door. No, no, no "IT" doesn't make me nervous at all ! Strange, isn'IT ???
LOL LOL
Biiig hugs to you, and smiles, too...

How timely *s* I'm getting ready for a retreat in a couple of weeks and was just scrounging around for something 'cute' to put my supplies in. I have a plastic container similar to what you have now . . . but somehow it just doesn't seem cute enough to entice new ladies to be my friend. I'll be watching to see what you come up with.
Darelene do you want something plastic, as you have or fabric? I use a plastice tote type thing...lol.. (good description don't ya think) in the living room to keep my current stitching projects in that I got from Big Lors at Christmas time.
Now would this "IT" be a new machine or heavens above a quilting system?
I too don't like the ugly plastic containers. So I made the "sewing bag" in April, that one has worked the best so far. The 17 patch bag I made is great and it's doesn't have a zipper but a snap instead. I've seen ladies use make-up travel bags that have clear compartments. Good luck with your search.
I can't seem to resist cute tins that look like mini suitcases or lunchboxes. I have some with advertising and some with cartoon characters. :-D I tend to rotate these depending on where I am going and what size I need. I keep some of the smaller ones packed with all the tools needed to do different types of crafting. One is packed with my punchneedles and threaders. One with hand quilting tools and so on. That way I can grab the right combination of tools to go along with my supplies when I quilt on the go.
Darn you anyway. What is "IT"!!!! :)
Gosh helping you with a new case is hard. Eveyone likes different sizes. I use a little zippered bag, but it would never hold all the stuff you got in that box.
Oh wait, I have some ideas... let me email you.....
Now you've got "it" in quotes. Is "it" a person? Too early for Santa -- too late for the Easter Bunny. Hmmmm..... an international traveler?
Oh, phooey, Darlene, you are SUCH a little tease!!! :)
I've got it! "It" is the stork!!!
No?
I use a soft case that has zippered clear plastic "pages" for storing all my travelling sewing supplies. I have duplicates of all my commonly used items all ready to go at any time. I keep my scissors, thread, bobbins, rotary cutter, pen, ripper, needle threaders, extra sewing needles, etc in the various see-through compartments. I bought it about six or seven years ago, and they no longer make the small size that I like to use for travelling. It is nice and compact and fits right into my soft Featherweight carrying case.
I recently started traveling for quilt retreats. I made myself a quilter's wallet and it fits quite a few of my sewing items. It doesn't have nearly the space you do in the box.
I hope you like "it" when "it" arrives, whatever it is.
I sent you an email - I have a guess of what "IT" is - and if I"m right I"m totally jealous!!!!
My container is not much different than yours, but it is a gold color tin that at one time had cookies or candies in it. I actually like having it all in one little box, even if I have to dig around a little. I know it's all there somewhere! lol!
I love to reuse tins. I have a Tabasco cracker tin that holds my stamps and a Almond Rocca tin that I store my button collection in.
I was like you - searching for the perfect sewing container, I had tried lots of pretty cookie/candy tins but they are never quite right. Then a couple of years ago a girlfriend gave me a small bag that is fabric and has a zipper to close and it opens like a book with plastic pages that have zippered compartments of different sizes. I think she bought it at a craft shop like Michaels. It is a fabulous bag.
I am going on holiday -- so I won't be able to see "IT" until I get back:(
I have something you might like. I'll send you a photo via e-mail shortly. Let me know what you think.
I use a basket to keep all of my hand work together. I will agree with you, it wouldn't travel well backed away. I don't know if you're looking to organize or just keep it all together. I'm sure there must be a pattern out there that would keep it all organized. If not, you could alway nod posh (sp?) a paper mache blox.
I have my sewing supplies in a tackle box. the top level has small compartments to keep little things sorted out. And the bottom container is big enough to hold a lot of things.

I have a soft shoulder bag case that unzips. There are zippered pockets and elastic slots for several spools of thread and other paraphernalia. I can carry ongoing 12" blocks.
Darlene, I used a fishing tackle box for years. The two folding trays in the top held needles and thread and other small stuff and I put all the bigger stuff in the bottom. They come in lots of different sizes and colors. If you don't mind plastic, they are a great way to store lots of different sized "stuff."
I bought a new makeup bag the other day to take with me to a retreat next week. It's a frosted purple and has the cutest raspberry looking bead on the zipper. You can barely see through it so it's not solid, but yet everything looks so cool in there. Look at that section in Target and othe rplaces and see if any of those grab you!
