A Heartbreaking Day
:-(

These Gingher embroidery scissors were a Christmas gift from my Dad in 1987. My parents were divorced when I was a baby and I didn't have a relationship with my Dad until my daughter was born. I'm sure there were gifts from him as I was growing up but these scissors mean the world to me because he really encouraged my love of sewing and such. I love scissors and have a delightful collection but these have been near and dear to me.

Oh the memories! They have been with me through many handwork projects - the silver is worn off in the fingers holes and that makes me smile. :-)

I didn't cry but I wanted to - why? Yesterday I was moving my stitchery project and the scissors slid off my hoop and hit my tile floor - they are ruined - one tip is bent! Huge sigh!!!!

I plan to put them away in a special box with a note in hopes that one day my daughter will find them and realize that my Dad and I are smiling down on her. :-

I will look through my collection of scissors and start making memories with a new pair. :-)

Thank you for letting me share about my heartbreak.

In Friendship!

What great memories - and I agree - hang on to those, as they represent something so good in your life - maybe you could frame them with some fabric and other sewing things, a little collage of memories.

Maybe they can be fixed. If not, the good memories are still there and you can share with your daughter as well. Hopefully, they will be treasured for years to come. You should write your thoughts down for your daughter too.

Do you think you could write or call Gingher and see if they can be repaired?

ohhh that is sad. They may no longer be physically useful but keep them and put on a special shelf or in a frame with other special memories or hang them directly on the wall with a picture of your dad close by.

Darlene,

That is sad - but are you aware that Ginghers has a repair service? They have a flat fee they charge to repair any of their own brand scissor - maybe all isn't lost?

please, please, please contact Gingher and share with them how special they are to you....I know that they have a wonderful sharpening service....I hope they can make them whole again...

I'll look forward to hearing what Gingher has to say. I suspect they will try to help. I have my Grandmother's Gingher shears that I used for many years while cutting out patterns to sew clothes for my girls. I understand how special this gift that you hold in your hand with fond memories would be missed from your daily stitching. Good luck, Darlene!

Ahh friend, I'm at your side with a big hug. I can't imagine what this must have brought back for you. Hard. Rough. I'm glad you took the time to share this with us though. It gives us a moment to hold you and your Dad up and perhaps rekindle the light with a spark of a note, a word of kindness and a whole lot of love. Warmly and with much kindness, *karendianne.

Oh I would have cried. I think you are lucky you have a gingher service over there. It's worth contacting them, I'm sure they could do something.

I'm really sorry to hear that this special treasure has been damaged. Wouldn't it be wonderful if they could be repaired!! Then put in a special place for your daughter. I kinda like "Piecefulafternoon's" comment about putting it in some sort of shadow box amongst other treasures you may have which are near and dear to your heart.

Sorry Darlene! These things happen unfortunately. Maybe you could frame them, with a note telling the story of them, and hang them on the wall.

I know you have to be just so mad at yourself as well. I'm sorry this happened. A replacement pair just isn't the same is it?

The scissors can be replaced Darlene but not the memories nor what they mean to you. Treasure them always.

Well, I wonder what a professional sharpener could do with them? There is a retreat that I go to in February and everyone brings their scissors. They say he does amazing work. You might call around to local quilt shops and at least talk to a good sharpener and see. Just an idea. Sorry my dear.

Oh, how I hate things that can't be fixed or made right. It makes me feel so helpless. I'm so sorry Darlene.

Hi Darlene, Such a shame about the scissors but like the others have suggested, call Gingher to see if they can repair them OR find someone local who sharpens scissors/knives. Depending on the damage, they might be able to grind it down and make them work again.

I'm so sorry that the tips bent. It was smart of you to put the note on them so your daughter would know why they meant so much to you. Mom and I went through her cedar chest a couple of years before she died. She had a ratty old bathrobe that she told me belonged to her grandfather and then she told me the story of why she kept it. I treasure that memory. My sisters threw out the robe before I could get up there after mom died. They had no idea the beautiful story that went with it. This is why I'm glad you tagged your scissors :)

That is just the sweetest story, and I'm so sorry about the scissors. I bet they will still be your daughter's favorite too, even if they no longer cut. ;)

Try to just remember the good things - where you got them and all the great times you had using them. Okay?

I'd at lest try to fix them -- but no matter what they hold great memories....neat story.

I am sorry that your scissors are injured...can they be repaired? I too attach such meaning to special gifts. You are doing something so nice with them!

Lurline said...

Seems like a lot of girls are optimistic you will be able to have them repaired - run with that for the moment and I hope all turns out well!

Oh Darlene, that is so sad. But I'm glad you have plans to put them away and keep them with the note! What a wonderful thing for her to find some day!

Is there no chance they can be repaired? I'm so sorry.

If they can't be fixed, I think I'd mount them in a shadow box with a note as to why they are so special. I'm so sorry they fell.

I have a habit of not using things that mean the most to me. I probably would have never used those scissors. What is better, to have used them and have the wonderful memories of using them, or having them setting like new in their box. I'm so sorry, but using them was the right thing to do.

Barb said...

Oh...I am sooo sorry...but that is smart to store them away with a note for future generations.

Oh, such a sad thing to happen to your scissors. But don't give up on them. Have the scissor sharpener look at them. Maybe they can be made usable again.
