Scrap Basket Sensations Blog Tour
Day Seven
*
It's my turn to talk to you about Kim Brackett's new bestselling book, Scrap Basket Sensations!
This means that leaving a comment on this post gives you an opportunity to win an autographed copy of Kim's book.
This book is also available from Martingale Publishing, Amazon or your local quilt store.
*
Do you remember this post about Scrappy vs The Safe Zone? Well, these are the quilts I had just completed. LOL
I had the honor of making two quilts for Kim's book. I was happily in The Safe Zone when I made Summer Daze using a Snippets Jelly Roll.
I was in the Scrappy Zone (way out of my comfort zone) to make Tool Shed. I kept telling Kim I couldn't use scraps to make this quilt. She laughed but gently encouraged me. Not bad for an amateur scrap quilter. LOL
Initially I opted not to interview Kim for this post because what could I ask her that others hadn't already asked.
I finally did ask her what size shoe she wears?
She wears an 8 1/2 so I wondered if she used her empty shoe boxes to store her carefully organized scraps. LOL
Actually sometime in 2010 she shared on her blog that she cut most of her stash into 2 1/2" strips and stores them in plastic shoe boxes (not her empty card board shoe boxes)
Instead I asked the talented ladies on this Blog Tour the following:
*
Are you comfortable working with true scraps (fabrics from many different lines) or do you prefer to use a coordinated set of fabrics?
*
Their answers:
*
Kim: "For the most part, I'm a scrap freak! For the Picnic quilt on the cover of the book, I used part of one Jelly Roll, part of another, and threw in some scraps just for the heck of it. "
*
Sherri: "I love working with true scraps...honestly, sometimes I just use pre-cuts because they save so much time!"
*
Mary: "For me I found I like to keep my civil war scraps separate from all the others...I guess same goes with Jo fabrics. I have a really hard time mixing batiks in with novelties! LOL I love working with the Moda pre-cuts for scrappy quilts even though they end up a coordinated scrappy look like Blessings from the Hollow quilt".
*
Stephanie: "The scrappier the better...mix them all up I say!"
*
Millie: "I do love scrappy quilts and these quilts all have their own personality."
*
Nicole: " I do sometimes work with true scraps, but I sure do spend a long time auditioning the ones that go best with each other!"
*
Sinta: "I prefer fabric groups myself. I have a whole lot of jelly rolls that I have collected, so it's an opportunity to use them."
*
Karen: "I say scraps. I'm trying to use a jelly roll for the tipsy baskets, and I'm having a hard time. I'd much rather use true scraps."
*
Sue: "For myself, I use either jelly-rolls or co-ordinated bundles. I really can't seem to make myself do truly scrappy!"
*
Carol: Carol was away on a quilting retreat when I asked my question but I know she loves working with scraps and coordinated fabric lines.
*
Me: We already know I prefer The Safe Zone - coordinated fabric lines. :-)
Some day I will organize all my scraps I have saved from every quilt I've made. Or not! LOL
The Safe Zone - Oasis and Breakfast at Tiffany's Jelly Rolls :-)
*
Leave a comment telling me whether you prefer The Scrappy Zone or The Safe Zone (coordinated fabric lines)
I plan to draw a winner on Friday, February 18th
*
then on to:
*
Karen at Nana Girl Quilts - February 17th
Sue at Quilt Times - February 18th
Carol at Brown Quilts - February 19th
*
Good Luck!!!
*
By the way Kim would love to be retired so she can spend her days quilting but for now she must use her
size 8 1/2 foot to put pedal to the medal on her red Honda CRV to drive to work every day.

«Oldest ‹Older 201 – 353 of 353I guess I'm a controlled scrappy. I like to us from a collection, but of course, some collections blend very well with others.

I'm definitely in the safe zone - but I am trying to break free o:) Thanks so much for the chance to win Kim's great book!
Scrappy for me - can't resist those charity shops with such beautiful quilt making fabrics maskerading as shirts, or dresses! Bargains - I love 'em!
I love the scrappy look! Maybe because that is all I have??
As a new quilter it has to be the safe zone, that's scarey enough for me at the moment!! Thanks for the chance to win.
Oh, I can hop on and off of both boats, Safe and true scrappy :) Does that make me an ambidextrous quilter ... lol Great post :)
Safe Zone or scrappy zone. I'm game for either.
I haven't ever made a really scrappy quilt. I'm still building up my scraps!
I am totally scrappy. The only time I use a fabric line is when I am designing something for Moda Bakeshop.
Fantastic post! I'm getting ready to quilt a very scrappy pineapple block quilt.....makes me think I'm more Safe Zone than I thought! This quilt is a beauty but wow...not so sure I would have even had some of these fabrics in my stash!
The Scrappy Zone is where you'll find me. Most of the time. Except when I get brave and decide to use some of my jelly rolls. They're so pretty sitting up on my shelves. But sometimes, ya just gotta :-)
I prefer the Safe Zone! Thanks for the opportunity to enter your giveaway!
I am for sure in the scrappy zone! thanks! Thanks for the chance and review!
I just love this new book and want to acquire by winning or purchasing. But I would rather win. I have a heap of scraps to use of all sizes.
Scrappy zone! Bits andp pieces of old projects is best!
I love the scrappy zone.
It's the same to me. One way is easier (Safe Zone) because you have all the fabric there and the other way (scrappy)takes more time and more stores = more shopping!! They are both great.
Scrappy Zone, I have scraps, scraps and more scraps. I save them so I can make scrappy quilts. Why do most of us save every usable piece? To make something scrappy. I really need to win so I can use some scraps. LOL
Marge
scrappy all the way. I would prefer my fabric to be like cheri saffiote- payne but not that dark. scrappy.
I have no problem mixing my scraps. I mix batiks with fabrics from the 80's, what ever goes.
I really like true scraps. I usually always use them and have only just started buying jelly rolls. But either way, this book looks to be great for either.
Oh, I am DEFINITELY a scrap person! I have a hard time loving coordinated quilts! lol
I live in the scrappy zone!
I don't know!! I have never made a quilt from 2½" strips! But, after seeing the great quilts made from patterns in "Scrap-Basket Sensations", I would be more than happy to give it a go. Thanks for the chance, Dianne
I like both, however, I would love to use the patterns in this book to turn some of my scrappy scraps into a beautiful quilt. Thanks for a chance to win.
I tend to gravitate towards the safety zone, but someday I'd like to truly try the scrappy way. I'd so love to win this book.
Darlene your quilts are gorgeous! I live in the safe zone but would love to break free, soon as I have enough scraps - for many years, I didn't save them. Wish now I had!
Please don't enter me in the give-away, I don't want to take away anyone's chance to win that will actually make quilts from the book - it's a lovely book but I know I'd probably never get to it!
Love the safe zone! I have never done a completely scrap quilt. I can't wait to give it a try!
It's the scrappy zone for me! Thanks for the giveaway.
lraetaylor@gmail.com
Well, I have to say I love them both, scrappy or safe zone. I buy lots of fabric that I just love and then I'll see a line of fabric that I want it all, so jelly rolls or layer cakes or fat 1/4's are the way to go. Thanks for the chance to win. I've been enjoying Kim's first book and would love to have this one.
I think the Scrappy Zone is fun. It pushes me to get out of the comfort zone. It also is the Practical Zone for most quilters, I think. It is not always possible to buy new fabrics/precuts, but most of us have squirreled away leftover pieces. And isn't that what quiltmaking came from? Turning little scraps into something useful and beautiful!
I definately prefer the scrappy quilting, trying to use up everything in my ever growing scrap boxes. I never buy fabric bigger than 1 yard (well, background fabric is another thing!) and I seldom use more than a third of a yard of the same fabric in the same project.
I always try to convice people to be brave and to combine fabrics in a free and liberated way!
Scrappy is wonderful and my favorite. I cut my scraps into strips so they are always handy, just like a jelly roll! Try it. You'll like it!
The safe zone for sure because I like to coordinate my colors!!!!! :)
I prefer scrappy quilt, because everyone is unique. Still I would like to sew a jellyroll quilt once...
I love both. I have made true scrap quilts and I love them! If you can turn loose and just put some zingers in, it really makes the quilt interesting!
Happy Quilting!
Cindy
I like the safe zone. I have tried the scrappy and it always feels out of control. I envy those who do it with ease though and it looks great.
I am a Scrappy person for sure. I hate to throw away all the extra bits from a project so I have an amazing collection of scraps!! Thanks for the opportunity to win this great book.
I am definitely scrappy zone.....at least from the perspective that I always pull together fabrics from various lines.
I HAVE NEVER DONE A SCRAPPY QUILT BUT I THINK I AM READY TO DO ONE AND THIS BOOK REALLY IS FOR ME.
I'm with you, Safe Zone! The problem is I have scraps, because I can't throw partial pieces away, so I could experiment with a truly scrappy quilt and if all else fails I can give it away. Love reading your blog.
The safe zone it what I like.
Hi, I prefer the safe zone, BUT I'm working on a scrappy twin quilt, just thought I should give it a try. Through them all into a bag Strips already cut), and picked without looking. I will have to admit that if I picked one that just didn't go, I threw it back in the bag. I guess this isn't true scrappy -- maybe half scrappy? Love to win the book and become more adventuresome
I love both. It's so hard to choose a favorite. The colors pop with the pre-cuts. The scrappy is so traditional. I'd love a copy of the book, especially signed. Every quilter can always use a new fun book.
I love both. Couldn't decide it my life depended on it. Would love a copy of the book, especially signed. Love Love Love Books
I love both. Couldn't decide it my life depended on it. Would love a copy of the book, especially signed. Love Love Love Books
Safe zone for me. Thanks so much for a chance and for participating.
I prefer the safe zone. Being a newer quilter, I don't have the confidence yet to foresee how the colors will mix in the final product. lol...
Darlene your quilts from Kim's book are super duper cute. I have always love your quilts. I am not here to win, just want to say "hi".
I have to say that I am all about the scrappy zone most of the time. If I can't live in the scrappy zone, I at least want several BRIGHT fabrics in my quilt. I have one "safe zone" quilt that I made, and I love it, but scrappy is better.
I straddle both zones. I am a safe zone quilter on some projects, and a scrappy quilter on others. But, I feel I do better with a kit or a line when starting a new project.
scrappy zone all the way. I LOVE the look of scrappy quilts!
annie@thepurcell.com
It's all about safety for me, because I don't have the confidence to choose my own fabrics. I do use scraps for some small projects, though.
I really like the scrappy zone. Mixing different things up is fun.
The scrappy zone for me, but controlled scrappy. I can't throw just anything in - it has to match what's already there!
The SAFE ZONE for me - isn't that why they make coordinated jelly rolls???!!!!!
I do prefer the safe zone but since I prefer girly brights lots of my scraps go together as well.
I'm a Safe Zone gal. I wish I could be the scrappy type but it just seems so much harder to choose the right scraps. I'm probably over thinking it. I hope I win the book. Every pattern looks great.
Thanks for another fun stop on the blog hop! And thanks, too, for the chance to win Kim's new book...
I prefer the safe zone as it is a lot less work to use a collection. That being said, some of my favorite quilts have been when I went scrappy!
I say "scrappy" but then everytime I do one--I have to match all the colors and that defeats the purpose somewhat!!!! I do love the jelly rolls though too!!! guess it depends on the day of the week!!!! lol
Hugs, Di
It's mostly the safe zone for me; however, I love scrappy quilts and have been trying to branch out.
Great post Darlene! Love the question you asked! I'm generally a safe zone girl, although sometimes I mix lines of fabric - if I'm in a wild and crazy mood LOL!
I like the scrappy zone though I do tend to choose some in the safe zone.
Safe zone. I used to be more adventuresome. Thanks for chance to win.
I definitely prefer the safe zone!! :)
I don't think I am brave enough to cut up ALL of my stash... I may have to consider it though and then get this book!
The Scrappy Zone for me! I have been using up all those fat quarters I bought just because...When friends see how much I enjoy scrappy quilts that give me their scraps to add to my collection....It's like free fabric!
I love the co-ordination of fat 1/4 bundles & jelly rolls - but they're expensive! So I have of necessity become a scrap zone kind of girl - and I love my scrap quilts!
I'm definitely a scrappy quilter. I prefer scrap quilts to perfectly coordinated ones. I have bought some charm packs and liked how they worked up but I prefer to mix up the fabrics!
Hmmm...I'm a new quilter, so for now I'd have to say Safe Zone for me!
I'd love to be entered into your giveaway! I'm curretnly in the safe zone but would like to be in scrappy zone (and know I will some day!).
I love scrappy, and I love mixing and matching what I have. But I sure do like using the precuts, too. Isn't it good to have the best of both!
I enjoy both, although I can't quiet through caution to the wind and just throw everything in. I usually come up with a theme or recipe (like spring, brights, civil war, etc.). I do think that 'more is more' when gathering a variety of fabrics.
Safe Zone for me too - I like the look of more controlled scraps, like red white and blue...but not crazy, pull anything from your bag scraps.
I'm a true scrappy person! I have never even bought a Jelly Roll! I try to use fabrics I have on hand and one of my favorite quilts is one I did using 2½" strips from a strip swap!
For just starting out I would have to say I like the Safe Zone. I do not have too many scraps. I am getting there though. Thank you for the chance to win some great stuff.
The scrappy zone for me. If you concentrate on color, scrappy can be awesome. Of course, safe zone is good too. I like everything.
I think what I love about scrappy quilts is that I can mix anything together and when it is all done it still looks amazing. Although...I made a bunch of flying geese one time completely scrappy and they turned out rather unlovely (can't call them ugly).
The Scrappy Zone for me, mix them up and I love it. Love to win the book. Thanks for the chance.
The scrappy zone is what I prefer, but somehow I usually end up getting pulled into the safe zone because I can't resist those precuts! I like to mix precuts though......is that scrappy or safe? I think it's fun!
I am attempting to escape the Safe Zone and enter the Scrappy Zone. I have three scrappy quilts under my belt now and working on my fourth!! Thanks for the chance to win this great book!
Definately the true scrap zone!
what, me, Oh I prefer the safe zone. Scrappy just doesn't come together for me. Keeping my fingers crossed.
The Scrappy Zone for me as I haven't bought jelly rolls or many other pre cuts- I work from my stash.
I am always amazed how many different fabrics will work together- some of them can be pretty ugly fabrics and yet will look beautiful all together in a quilt.
Thanks for the chance to win Kim's book- I have her first one and like it alot.
Regards from Western Canada,
Anna
I'd love to be a spontaneous, scrappy kind of quilter, but I'm not. Definitely the safe zone for me!
Gosh, it pretty much depends on the day. I think I'm Multi-Zonal.
Definitely the safe zone...but I'm trying to go out of my comfort zone to truly scrappy. This book is great!
I've been trying not to buy more fabric and started using scraps for the last couple quilts I have made and I love the way they have turned out. I have had to buy 1 piece of material to "pull" it all together though. I would love to make some of the quilts in this book. Thanks for a chance to win.
I'm one of the safe ones. I am unsure of choosing my own colors.
I am the safe zone quilter. But have made 2 fall quilts scrappy. I was happy that I was able to let go the controlled thing. I'd love a signed copy of this book. I love all the pictures I have seen.
The Safe Zone, I am just not overly scrappy just yet and first I need to have some scraps to choose from. Need more fabric!!
I love doing planned scrappy quilts. I tend to use my stash. Love the quilts you made for the book.
Safe zone, I have not quilted enough to trust myself in picking colors and fabric designs that look good. Great book, I have been amazed by the quilts, wow.
I love the looks of all the quilts from this book by Kim Brackett. Would love to win this book.
Oh I love the scrappy zone! this is such great fun!
Scrappy zone for me!!! I have quite a collection of fabric and when you only use a little it seems to be plenty left over for other projects!!! :) yeah!!!
The book looks great!
I am definitely in the Scrap Zone and right now trying to use us some stash!
I used to be a safe zone only kinda girl but lately, thanks to the help of Bonnie Hunter I've become more of a scrappy zone kinda girl.
I'm a Scrappy Zone kind of girl! Would love to win this awesome book.
I think I'm somewhere in the middle! I rarely like every fabric in a line and like to pull some of them and add more of the ones I like. True scrappy is really, really, really hard work for me and I don't think making a quilt should be that hard!
Definitely scrappy for me!
I love truly scrapy quilts, which is why I'd love to win this book...I have at least 2 bins of 2.5" scrap strips ready to go.
I am a serious Safe Zone type of gal. I love that I don't have to put in too much effort in finding the fabrics to coordinate because I much more enjoy the process of making. (Plus I'm real anal about two same fabrics touching and all that - so scrap quilts are sooo challenging for me)
I like the safe zone! I also enjoy viewing other quilters' scrappy quilts. Would love to win a copy of this wonderful book.
I am mostly the safe type of gal, but I absolutely love the scrappy quilts. I just wish that I was more adventurous with my fabrics.
I save my scraps...and then give them away...so definitely like the safe way ;)
I feel so much free-er to use scraps. If I buy a pre-cut roll, I'm always afraid I'll make up a pattern that I should've saved for something else. So silly, I know....
:-}pokey
I prefer the scrappy zone. I have yet to buy a jelly roll or any other precut. I just make my own. Thanks for the chance to win this book!
valekort at yahoo dot com
Scrappy zone definitely!!!!! Love the quilts
Scrappy zone definitely!!!!! Love the quilts
I'm partial to the scrappy zone.
Love Kim's first book. Thanks for the chance to win her second.
Jill
Jillh@moscow.com
I guess I prefer the Safe Zone - though I love scrappy quilts, too. :)
I'm definitely a safe zone quilter.
lalaw at douglasfast dot net
Oh probably the safe zone...although it would be fun to get a sense of adventure and wander into the scrappy zone!
I prefer the Safe Zone, only because I usually make scrappy quilts with collections, so I have safe zone scraps, lol.
The scrappy zone. I love pulling fabrics from different groups when I'm in a fabric store, and I find that the oddball fabrics in my quilts are what give them some life and verve. My willingness to use true scraps is unexpected for me, because I'm really quite rigid in every other area of my life. Go figure.
Thanks for the giveaway.
I think that some of the coordinating fabric collections make it difficult to work in the scrappy zone because I have a mind set that I need this kind of green and this shade of blue etc. I find it a lot easier to get scrappy when I am working from my stash.
I am a safe zone person. I have a hard time with scraps but I love scrappy quilts just don't do them well myself. This book looks like it might have projects that would encourage the scrappy side.
Darlene, you are such a hoot, love your quilts. I love the scrappy look and get these from putting left over safe zone fabrics on my shelf. So a little of both for me. Love Kim's book.
I am trying to work toward scrappy, but my natural tendenancy is toward the safe zone.
Hello Darlene, I'd like to think I could be a scrappy gal, and I do try but I often go to the safe zone! Being a Virgo certainly doesn't help! Lol! But I truly love scrappy quilts and yours turned out sweet as can be! Thanks for the opportunity to win a copy of this beauty of a book. Pam in Chico
Safe for me - I am attempting to do a scrappy quilt but I have a lot of coordinating fabrics cut out. Two friends have said that they will help me keep it scrappy.
I'm a safety zone crafter. Librans prefer equal and balanced! But sometimes I break out and use scraps from anywhere... life was meant to be LiVeD! lol :) Thanks for the chance to win!
I love the look of scrappy quilts! As a new quilter, though, I don't have enough scraps yet (though I'm working on it) to make a true scrappy quilt. Thanks for the chance to win!
As I am fairly new at fabric acquistion I am making quilts SAFE ZONE fabric collections. I like the suggestion of turning yardage into 2 1/2 inch strips.
Very interesting quilts.
I like the Scrappy Zone best..thanks for the giveaway.
I just recently have been using The Safe Zone more often as it is a time saver. I would spent lots of time coordinating fabrics for a scrappy quilt. haha
Thanks for a chance to win this great book.
Oh, Scrappy zone for me. Love scrappy quilts.
I am definitely a scrappy kind of quilter. I bought my first charm pack recently and that was the first time I ever bought a coordinated bunch of fabric. How sad am I!
Scrappy for sure! Thanks for the chance!
I'm right in between. I would like to be in the safe zone but being poor and have never bought a jelly roll, I am in the scrappy zone - like it or not! Sometimes you just have to work with what you've got!
I do both types. I really love how scappy quilts look, but I also love the ease of using a coordinated fabric line.
I prefer the safe zone...I like my fabrics to play well with each other and don't trust them all mixed up to look good in the end without some real planning.

I too would love to win a signed copy of this book.
I would start with the cover quilt using very bright fabrics.
Hello there.. Late commer here...hmmm did I spell that correct... Well never mind.. I'm Swedish ...lol agh Darlene you know me... Scrappy Forever...;0) phew it's hard to try and win this book 338 before me... but I see why... The book is a goldmine for us scraplovers...:0)
Great post. Love your insights. Fun book.

I am a scrappy zone kind of girl! Thanks for the giveaway.
I enjoyed reading the answers from the other book tour gals. I'm a scrappy zone gal. I've bought only one jelly roll, haven't used it yet, and enjoy mixing up as much as I can for quilts. I think the individuality of what we toss together is half the fun--and surprise--in our quilting.
I'm a safe zone girl, who in her heart really WANTS to be a scrappy zone girl, but isn't that brave. However, when too many safe zone scraps add up I need to enter the scrappy zone before I'll allow myself to buy my way back into the safe zone. Follow me?? :-)
The Scrappy zone for me - the more fabrics the merrier!
Either line would be gret, but my first choice is the safe zome. Thanks for sharing and it's good to know Karen's show size.lol
Jane
It really matters my mood. Yesterday I was loving the scrappy zone and really enjoying playing with my scraps to make a quilt block for a bee... Today however I am really more cautious and am going to work on a safety zone project :)
The scrappy zone it's my favorite way togo!
Scrappy zone...thanks for the blog tour. I do tend to make my scraps match, as silly as that sounds.
Hi - I would probably pick the Safe Zone, most of my quilts have been made from coordinated fabrics, but I did make one " Kansas Sunflowers" which was from a book of patterns " Quilts from the Depression" and I challenged myself to use mostly fabrics from my stash! :)
sandangels1945@hotmail.com
Done scrappy and safe. When I am pressed for time and am gifting a quilt, I opt for the safe zone...
Thanks so much!
I would have to say the Safe Zone for me. I'm not comfortable with my choice of color combination & pattern so I prefer to let the experts do that. Maybe someday I will feel confident enough to work in the Scrappy Zone.
I feel best when I am in the Safe Zone. If I try to make anything else in a scrappy look I keep discarding the idea and try for a more safe look.
I love, love, love scrappy quilts. I have scraps from waaaay back. Love them all, and use them all. The old, the ugly and the "why the bleep did I buy that" scraps. MaryD
The scrappier the better!
