Bag-o-phobic

Bag - A container of flexible material with an opening at the top, used for carrying things

Phobic - suffering from irrational fears

Are you a sewist who possesses the Heaven sent talent to make bags? You have no fear of zippers, snaps, etc? If this describes you then I bow down and applaud you. Color me jealous. :-)

Recently my friend, Carol, and I were discussing how much we love bags and how envious we are of blog friends who make so many cute, pretty, adorable, sweet (you name it) bags. Huge Sigh!!!! Sadly, we both suffer from extreme bag-o-phobia. When we open a bag pattern and start reading the instructions our eyes glaze over, roll back in our heads, butterflies start fluttering in our tummies, beads of sweat appear on our foreheads, etc. It's not a pretty sight. LOL

One of our talented blog friends is Sherri of A Quilting Life - that girl makes some fabulous bags. In our conversation, Carol and I were discussing how we could get one of Sherri's bags. Could we sneak into her sewing room and grab two bags or maybe we could enlist the help of one of Sherri's friends. Sigh! We couldn't think of anything we could even offer in trade. Bigger Sigh!

Do you suppose groveling would help?

Nah, I didn't think so but we're not beneath groveling.

LOL :-o

Picture borrowed from Sherri's blog (with her permission) - we LOVE these! :-)

And, then there's sweet, talented Wendy. That girl makes all sorts of bags; some with zippers, handles, buttons, snaps, etc. They are adorable and fabulous. How do I know? Take a look at the next picture - lucky me! LOL

A sampling of bags Wendy has made especially for me! :-)

Somewhere along the way I thought I would make a bag or two. Thought I might make one for Carol, too (she'd be so surprised - LOL)

I have Terry Atkinson's pattern, Zippy Strippy, some Millie's Closet fat quarters and three matching zippers. Just the thought makes my eyes glaze over, roll back in my head, the butterflies start fluttering in my tummy and the beads of sweat appear on my forehead. Big, Big Sigh! :-o

Silly me - it's just not going to happen because I'm seriously BAG-O-PHOBIC. LOL

I hope you're having a good day - feel free to laugh at Carol and I. LOL

Bear in mind that this is all very 'tongue in cheek' - my silliness!

In Friendship!

It's the zippers, I just say no to zippers! And the only reason is because they scare me! If you can't sew bags your second best plan is to find a friend who can!

I can't laugh, I too, have the phobia!!

Just think of the zipper as a 1 1/2" strip of fabric that just happens to open after sewing to straight seams

I stress over bags. I have made several and some of them have been ok, others not so much. I feel your pain.

You are too funny! And look we're not alone...there are other people that feel the same as we do.

You put into words just what I feel. I love to sew and have made many of my own clothes ( and beautifully, not to brag) since I was a teen, but whenever I attempt a bag, it looks like something I should take to the supermarket to help save the planet.

Oh yes, you can do it! I've made about 10 of those zippy strippy bags. Just take a deep breath, read carefully, and start. Use cheapy junk fabric for the first one if you have to.

The weirdest thing of the whole pattern is when you cut the ends off the zipper.

I'm an old pro at zippers from my dress making days - and even I was afraid to make a zippered makeup bag. So I know what you mean about eye-rolling and butterflies. I've made two and the first zipper was totally acceptable and mine second one was perfect. However, I like your way best - get someone to make it for you! Smart. Very smart.

I am highly afraid of zippers also!
Thanks for the smile!

I get the same glazed look in my eyes. My BFF helped me make a Bow Tuck Bag once and boy was it ever challenging!! Thank goodness there were no zippers involved. I might have gone comatose ;-)

I have that Zippy Strippy bag pattern too, but haven't made it yet. If I could actually find it, I just might give it a try! LOL

Most of the bags I see are sweet, creative, and practical, but they remind me too much of the garment sewing I used to do--mainly for other people. I shudder when I think about that kind of sewing again--zippers, pockets, and all. I just cannot do it with a smile on my face.
I made an X-Bag once, or was it a Z-Bag? and it turned out OK. That's all I've done.

It's EASY!!! You can do it. One step at a time. I used to have zipper phobia (still do at times) but I think I pretty much got passed it. I can't wait to see your bag.

Darling bags indeed! I have made Snap Happy bags with the steel measuring tape in the top, and put in plenty of zippers in my time sewing clothes and last year making pillow covers, but haven't made any zip top bags. No phobia here, just no desire :)

Oops I didn't say that very well, I would love to make a zippy pouch or 2 for you and Carol.

You are so funny Darlene. I try to avoid those zippers and sewing things that aren't flat, but since I don't have someone to gift bags to me... I am left on my own. I have to say that next to bags... another thing I can't seem to sew is potholders. What's with that?
