Scrap Basket Sensations Blog Tour
Day Seven
*
It's my turn to talk to you about Kim Brackett's new bestselling book, Scrap Basket Sensations!
This means that leaving a comment on this post gives you an opportunity to win an autographed copy of Kim's book.
This book is also available from Martingale Publishing, Amazon or your local quilt store.
*
Do you remember this post about Scrappy vs The Safe Zone? Well, these are the quilts I had just completed. LOL
I had the honor of making two quilts for Kim's book. I was happily in The Safe Zone when I made Summer Daze using a Snippets Jelly Roll.
I was in the Scrappy Zone (way out of my comfort zone) to make Tool Shed. I kept telling Kim I couldn't use scraps to make this quilt. She laughed but gently encouraged me. Not bad for an amateur scrap quilter. LOL
Initially I opted not to interview Kim for this post because what could I ask her that others hadn't already asked.
I finally did ask her what size shoe she wears?
She wears an 8 1/2 so I wondered if she used her empty shoe boxes to store her carefully organized scraps. LOL
Actually sometime in 2010 she shared on her blog that she cut most of her stash into 2 1/2" strips and stores them in plastic shoe boxes (not her empty card board shoe boxes)
Instead I asked the talented ladies on this Blog Tour the following:
*
Are you comfortable working with true scraps (fabrics from many different lines) or do you prefer to use a coordinated set of fabrics?
*
Their answers:
*
Kim: "For the most part, I'm a scrap freak! For the Picnic quilt on the cover of the book, I used part of one Jelly Roll, part of another, and threw in some scraps just for the heck of it. "
*
Sherri: "I love working with true scraps...honestly, sometimes I just use pre-cuts because they save so much time!"
*
Mary: "For me I found I like to keep my civil war scraps separate from all the others...I guess same goes with Jo fabrics. I have a really hard time mixing batiks in with novelties! LOL I love working with the Moda pre-cuts for scrappy quilts even though they end up a coordinated scrappy look like Blessings from the Hollow quilt".
*
Stephanie: "The scrappier the better...mix them all up I say!"
*
Millie: "I do love scrappy quilts and these quilts all have their own personality."
*
Nicole: " I do sometimes work with true scraps, but I sure do spend a long time auditioning the ones that go best with each other!"
*
Sinta: "I prefer fabric groups myself. I have a whole lot of jelly rolls that I have collected, so it's an opportunity to use them."
*
Karen: "I say scraps. I'm trying to use a jelly roll for the tipsy baskets, and I'm having a hard time. I'd much rather use true scraps."
*
Sue: "For myself, I use either jelly-rolls or co-ordinated bundles. I really can't seem to make myself do truly scrappy!"
*
Carol: Carol was away on a quilting retreat when I asked my question but I know she loves working with scraps and coordinated fabric lines.
*
Me: We already know I prefer The Safe Zone - coordinated fabric lines. :-)
Some day I will organize all my scraps I have saved from every quilt I've made. Or not! LOL
The Safe Zone - Oasis and Breakfast at Tiffany's Jelly Rolls :-)
*
Leave a comment telling me whether you prefer The Scrappy Zone or The Safe Zone (coordinated fabric lines)
I plan to draw a winner on Friday, February 18th
*
then on to:
*
Karen at Nana Girl Quilts - February 17th
Sue at Quilt Times - February 18th
Carol at Brown Quilts - February 19th
*
Good Luck!!!
*
By the way Kim would love to be retired so she can spend her days quilting but for now she must use her
size 8 1/2 foot to put pedal to the medal on her red Honda CRV to drive to work every day.

Ciao ciao
The SAFE ZONE for me! I love the look of scrappy quilts but I just can't seem to let go and embrace it myself. Okay, I have made one scrappy quilt - sort of scrappy and I do love it. It just took me an awful long time to choose the scraps. I'd love to win a signed copy of this book.
Safe Zone for me. I like the look of scrappy quilts but when I go to sew I want something that looks like its supposed to be used together. :) Marietta
I prefer the scrappy zone !Finger crossed.
XOXO
Oh, definately the Scrappy Zone! Colors, tonals, repros, 30's, market, solids, oh the whole mix. Just so fun to pet all those pretties.
I like both Scrappy and Safe depends on the quilt/item being made.
Cheers
Hi Darlene,
Thanks for your report and your impressions about the book.
As a Quilt beginner, I would prefer 'The Safe Zone'.
(also still lacking the stock of scrap, but I collect already hard.;)
greetings from germany
Kat
Shout out for scraps!
Sorry I wasn't here to give you an answer...but you know me so well. Great post!
I'm definitely scrappy zone!! ;)
I like both Safe or Scrappy, it depends on the quilt I am doing. But the Scrappy look means much more "hard work" for me, it does not go naturally.
Jana in Prague, Czech Republic
Interesting twist to the book tour interviews :) Enjoyed!
Safe Zone for me as well...although I'm trying to go to the scrap box first esp. for applique parts or if I think a scrap of the same fabric is hiding and I need 2.5" squares such as in One Bunny Hill BOM.
Love Summer Daze scrappy-ness!
I have not as much experiences, but I think I prefer the safe zone.
Best regards
Gabi from Germany
I like the Scrappy Zone. You get to see all the different fabrics used.
What treasures!
I love the scrappy zone. I use as many fabrics as I possibly can in my quilts and do not worry about what fabric line it came out of. Thanks for the giveaway.
LOVE this book! would love to win it!! thanks for the chance. :-)
I love both the quilts you did from the book. I love making Scrap Zone Quilts HOWEVER I do buy jelly rolls/buns/charms/etc/. I have checked my Quilt Store for the book but didn't see it. Will be the top on my list to purchase at Mid Atlantic or when I go to Lancaster or get FQS order it. Or may have to breakdown and get it faster via internet...
Definitely scrappy for me! Please enter me in the drawing.
I love scrappy quilts. I would love to win a signed copy of the book.
I like scrap quilts! I often take old fabrics from the fleamarket to make a scrapquilt. This book is full of ideas for scrapquilts. I must have it to make quilts from my old fabrics.
Elke L.
Gotta tell you that I love Summer Daze! And I can do safe or scrappy. But most often I do more scrappy because I don't buy many precuts. Thanks for the chance to win Kim's book! :0)
I am totaly The Scrappy Zone. I use all scraps in my scrappy quilts. I love them.
I am totaly The Scrappy Zone. I use all scraps in my scrappy quilts. I love them.
The safe zone works best for me but I try to throw in a few fabrics that are not part of the collection.
I am in the zone, BUT...I am a wanna be scrapper. I love looking @ scrap quilts, someday I shall play with my scraps, I am getting there (I think this book would help!).
It's probably the Safe Zone for me. I do have real problems picking fabrics to use together and they must be perfect to me. If I have any reservations, I purchase more until I get just the right blend. I'd like to win the book to help me put together all the scraps I have. Thank you for the opportunity.
I'd say Safe Zone because I am a beginner and I think it's easier but I do love scraps and save every little bit of fabric. Thanks for the chance!
ap_lemos at yahoo dot com
I tend to be a safe zone person and use fabric collections for most of my quilts. On a rare occasion, I'll pull scraps from my stash to make quilts, but not very often. Thanks!
I'm definitely a Scrap Zone person! I LOVE making scrappy quilts!!!! The more fabrics, the better. Even those questionable ones are wonderful when cut small! Thanks for the chance to win this book!
So far I am a Safe Zone girl, but I want to try some scrappy. Those precuts just get me all excited since they look so yummy all together. If....no, WHEN I get a copy of the book I will definietly try a scrappy quilt!! Thanks for the chance.
The Scrappy Zone for me. Book looks great and I would love to win a copy. Thanks for the chance!
Oh geez, I'm torn between the two..depending on the "quilt idea" that I have, LOL since they never seem to make it into a quilt! If I have to pick one I say safe zone.
Safe zone for me. I try to do scrappy but then I end up trying to coordinate everything to make it all match. Not worth the hassle. Thanks for the chance, Darlene! Both of your quilts are beauties!
I am for sure a safe zone scrappy quilter. I am going to have to get over it though. I have to use those "other" scraps soon!
Do I have to chose? I like to work with scraps as well as coordinated fabrics!
I'm still in the early stages of my quilting "career" and haven't yet got enough of a stash to do scrappy too well... And perhaps not enough confidence. There are so many amazing and diverse coordinated fabric lines out there that I find it hard to imagine doing scrappy. But I would like to try. One day :)
I prefer the safe zone since I'm still new at quilting. Thanks for the chance to win.
I am a safe zone but have made scrap quilts before....I love using up my scraps. Maybe I am just lazy???
I'm so glad you said I "gently encouraged" you instead of saying I told you to stop crying and put the quilt together already! Ha! Ha! You did a great job with the quilt!
I like the safe zone. I take to much time deciding on fabric in the scrappy zone.
The Scrappy Zone for me. I love scrap quilts!
I like the look of both the scrappy and the safe zone...it would depend on what I was going to make...
I probably fall more into the safe zone for sure, love those jelly rolls and everything coordinates already! Someday I will try scrappy, maybe just something small.
Scrappy zone, but confess that I will not mix novelties with batiks. I'm a work in progress. But love and admire the spontaneous explosion of color in scrappy quilts.
Hi Darlene! I love scrappy quilts. I like to use several fabric lines from the same designer in a project. At the same time, some pre-cuts just grab me and make a project. It's fun to use just scraps in a project and then again its fun to buy pre-cuts and let them do the work:) I like it all:)
Oh I prefer the safety zone but am trying to push myself more often into the scrappy zone.
I so love the look of scrappy quilts but have not done one yet. Since I have not been quilting that long I don't have alot of scraps to work with but when I do, watch out!!
Love the quilts I've seen on this blog tour. This book is truly a source for inspiration. BTW, I love scrappy. I rarely buy precuts.
definitely scrappy zone!
I definitely love the scrappy zone! I love all your work, and this new book looks absolutely fabulous. Sure would love to win a copy!
I was going to say Scrappy Zone, but then I realized virtually every quilt I have ever made was in the Safe Zone. But a SCRAPPY Safe Zone. I love batiks & florals together, all mixed up. I would really enjoy this book, I just know it.
I am pretty much a scrappy girl, but have been buying some moda collections I couldn't resist over the past year or so, so we will see what becomes of those lol.
I'd really love to win this book! It looks awesome!
Hi Darlene! Wonderful post! I'm a safe zone kind of gal, but that doesn't stop me from using my scraps in smaller projects. Mostly I like put my small pieces in a basket marked "Pin Cushions" and use those for that purpose but the larger scraps I save thinking I'll make some fun quilts but haven't found patterns I liked for them until Kim's book. I can see the scraps flying off my...well, jumping out of their hiding place to line up for these quilts, BUT, I still like to as close to the 'safe zone' as possible. LOL. I do love the quilt you made for the the book though, so maybe there is hope for me huh? Hugs...
Hi Darlene. What a great question. I like scrappy quilts but have never done a totally scrappy quilt. I guess I'm like Sinta, I like the safety zone of my Jelly Roll. Although, someday I'm going to go for it and do a scrappy quilt.
Currently I'm in the Safe Zone but migrating to the Scrappy Zone!
Thanks for the chance to win this awesome book!
I like the safe way although I have done a few very carefully chosen scraps. The two jelly rolls are beautiful.
I'd say I more often do scrappy than safe. But scrappy really only works if you are using a LOT of fabrics. Ten fabrics that aren't coordinated can look like a mess, but a hundred fabrics look beautiful and interesting. My only rule is to have some calm or unifying fabrics so it doesn't look out of control.
Oh the scrappy zone!
I am definitely in the Safe Zone.I
too, love the look of scrappy quilts but I always end up with too
many greens or blues or reds all together in a row or side by side.
I would really love to win a copy of this wonderful book please.
Your quilts look lovely, Mrs. Daze.
Gratefully, Luba
chris.luba@sympatico.ca
I'm a scrap person, myself.
I would love to win the giveaway!
Great Blog Tour!
Jayne
I love the look of scrappy but cannot actual be scrappy. I am what l call organized scrappy.
I love the scrappy zone. The more scraps, the better.
lv2kwilt at gmail dot com
These days I've been playing in the safe zone but I've certainly accumulated enough scraps and stash to venture back to the scrappy zone anytime.
Your quilts look great Darlene!
I'm an auditioned scrappy, mixed lines kind of girl...love Kim's book!
Love the safe scrappy zone - go figure. I love my scrappy look and then I put one constant fabric for my safe zone. I just like the look. Can't wait to start on the Scrap Basket patterns - they are wonderful. Pick me, pick me. Judy C
Oh, I am definitely in the scrappy zone. Scrappy though for me keeps me safely in the reproductions, so I guess that is somewhat in the safe zone. How is that for sitting in the middle of the fence!
Love your quilts! Your scrappy quilt came out great! I'd like to think I'm in the scrappy zone but sometimes I chicken out and go to the safe zone. I just finished a quilt in the quasi-scrappy zone (does it count when you use all brights but from different lines?)and I'm really happy with it. The scrappy zone is difficult when you like so many different types of fabric lines!
Now that was fun to read. You did a excellent job using your scraps. You know I have not made a quilt just using scraps or the precuts. I do use from my stash but none of it is precut like others do. Maybe I should do that I might make more quilts it was ready to sew.
I definitely love going scrappy. I was a few years into quilting before I realized that those where the quilts that really jazzed me. But gathering/saving fabric for scrappy takes time so I have to admit that for the last two years in the interest of actually finishing things I've been working with kits and coordinated fabrics most often and have been very happy with those.
But my heart belongs to a true scrap quilt!
It's been fun seeing all these peaks into Kim's book! thanks for sharing!
I would say the Safe Zone. The cost for fabric in Canada is a big reason for this. I have started to make some scrappier quilts and am enjoying stretching myself. Thanks for the giveaway!
I am all about scrappy but I do the safe zone too! I just love the pictures from this book and can't wait till I get my own copy!!
audreybretz@gmail.com
I go either way. Safe is easy, it's done for you, but the other way just takes me a while to get it the way I want it.
I like scrappy...I have enjoyed reading all the posts about the book and projects
The scrappy zone is the safe zone for me :) Nothing to match together...no pressure...it all works! I love to shop at fabric stores, so instead of one fabric line or one colour, I love to search for fabrics. If the design calls for one colour, I'll buy 4 Fat Quarters of various fabrics, rather than use 1 yard of the same fabric. ANd have never made a quilt from all the same line of fabric. It's just fun for me to scrap it up:)
I've never used a jelly roll, but, I did use charm pack on a quilt and on a table runner. I usually find a fabric I really like, then throw several other fabrics it with it, usually NOT from the same fabric line. I don't want my quilts to look like everyone elses. Scrappy quilts my great grandmother made is what got me interested in quilts and quilting.
i luv the safe zone...but i like to make scrap quilts from the "safe zone scraps" ... I'm all about Kansas Troubles scraps as they all look wonderful together!!
I am a true scrappy kind of gal, my stash is sorted by color only. Please put my name in the hat for a chance to win Kim's book, thank you.
Always drawn to scrap quilt pictures, I remember when I was a beginner quilter way back in the 70's, trying to 'duplicate' what I saw. I would get so frustrated and just ball everything up and toss it. Funny how years later, I'm a scrap-a-holic, and wouldn't have it any other way!! I guess the point is, it just takes a little practice!
The scrappier the better, I say. I love the way scraps just seem to come together even though if you were actually picking fabrics, you might not put those particular fabrics together. Just grab a scrap and go with it! You'll be amazed at the outcome.
I love both Scrappy and Safe Zones, but actually do more scrappy quilts now that I've made a few. Love using scraps from my stash! Thanks for offering this book as a giveaway...would love to win it!
Karen
I definitely lean toward the safe zone, but am trying to branch out and attempt a true scrappy quilt.
barberg@sbcglobal.net
I'm a safe zone kind of gal!
Scrappy Zone for me! But they do need to "feel" right together overall in order to go in the mix.
I'm in the safe zone (for now) because the fabric I have to work with is cordinated. But I just love the scrapy look...one day I will go scrappy.
The scrappy zone definitely sounds like fun, and I'd love to win a copy of that book!
I love "scrappy zone", would love the chance to win this fabulous book...fgrivic@cogeco.ca
Scrappy zone for me! the more the merrier!!
Scrappy Zone - because my mother will let me borrow her 80s scraps. I love figuring out what might "go together" though takes me forever to decide. I like all the patterns I've seen from the book so would love to win an autographed copy. Thanks for the blog hop tour!
Definitely Scrappy Zone!
I am definitely in the Safe Zone! I'm not brave enough to do really do scrappy!!!!
I love scrappy. Looks more like what my grandma used to make! Thanks for the chance to win....
I used to do more scrappy, but most recently have been using fabric groups. I'm thinking it might be time for more scrappy!
I am a Scrappy Zone kinda girl. Great post DArlene, I just love Kim's books.
I've always been a very scrappy type quilt maker. It's only in the last few years that I find myself wanting to do more co-ordinated looking quilts..want to but still end up doing scrappy.
I admit I'm a SAFE ZONE kind of girl.
Since I am color blind when it comes to oranges and reds, I ten to play it "safe".
LOL, my husband always said I was "safe" for him to date. LOL
I used to be a safe zone kind of gal. But now I am a scrappy zone gal. I love making scrap quilts. I'm working on 2 at the moment. Would love to win the book. Hugs
When it comes too scrappy, I roll both ways! LOL! It really depends on the quilt.
I'm living life in the SCRAPPY ZONE!! The scrappier, the better!
Thanks for a chance to win!
I love scrappy quilts, but have never made one, so it would be the Safety Zone for me. I love Kim's new book, thanks for a chance to win a copy!
safe zone, too scared to try to mix it up on my own
I guess I fit the Scrappy Zone best since I rarely buy a complete fabric line (unless it's a charm pack). When designing a quilt I pull fabrics based on color groups.
Really like both of your quilts, but my fav is Scrappy zone!
I love scrappy quilts, but I have to admit that I like being in a safe zone. Like Nicole, I would spend way too much time auditioning fabrics. Thanks for including everyone's comments about being scrappy. It's fun to know what others are using, especially when we see their amazing work on their blogs.
Scrappy Zone here!
The more the merrier is my motto.
Fun book tour.
Karen
This book is great! I am a Safe Zone person so maybe with this book I can break out.
I have had an epiphany since I began tackling my considerable stash and then discovering pre-cut collections. My stash is MY attempt at creating my own collections. However, it is a flawed idea, at least for me. I do not have the color courage to make adequate variety. So though I am happily working through my own hoards, I love the Safe Zone of pre-cut collections. And in the process I am gaining the color insight and courage to add the depth to my stash quilts.
Would love the safe zone!!
I love the look of a true scrappy but I would say I still sit comfortably in Safe Zone. I'm working on it!! LOL!
This book looks so interesting! A great way to use some of that stash. I love scrap quilts. I would love to win this book. Thank you for the opportunity.
Your post is the best! I love the scrappy zone with a little bit of organization, I don't mix just anything together. If I use a jelly roll I need to add some other fabrics to the mix. I hope I win one of these books :-)
I think I am in the safe zone with a toe in the scrappy zone. I like the scrappy look, but like Nicole, I agonize over it too much.
i definitely enjoy working with scraps, and one of my favorite designers mixes up her reproductions, with batiks and contemporay fabrics. Someday I might be able to do that myself. If I want to use a combo, I ususally resort to a store that combines beautifully and buy there fat quarter packs.
Scrappy all the way for me. I just love how all the colours play together in these quilts - and they have never let me down!
Luv........Ann J
Hello! I prefer what I call 'coordinated scrappy' - I choose a color scheme and style instead of grabbing completely random fabrics. Happy Wednesday! :)
I like the safe zone for now. I am a fairly new quilter and still scared of mixing everything together. Love the pre-cuts.
I like the scrappy zone. But I'm kinda kooky that way.
Love Scrappy Daze - it is so colorful! I definitely prefer scrappy for my quilts, but for bags and other projects I lean toward the coordinated groups.
Thanks for an interesting post!
I don't blog (yet) so I'll leave you my email addy!
Quiltnsrep(at)yahoo(dot)com
I love scrappy quilts...I find that they attract me the most easily. However, using coordinated fabrics is easy when the overall look of the quilt needs symmetry. That way I don't have to hunt down all the fabrics that will "go" together. So, I guess, the answer is both.
Thanks for the chance to win this book.
shoppernana@gmail.com
Hi Darelene!!
Awesome job!! I am like you...safe zone BUT I love the LOOK of the scrappy! I wish I could take the plunge!! Maybe someday!! I am loving this book and all the quilts have been stunning!! Well done!
Paulette
Interesting reading everyone's responses. The safe zone with coordinated fabrics is nice, but too expensive for me typically. I'll buy a bit of one or two fabrics I really like and mix in scrappy with it. So I guess I'm in the scrappy zone!
I'd probably say I'm the SAFE ZONE, but if someone dropped off a bag of scraps, I'd certainly use them.
The safe zone for me although i think I could try scrappier after seeing the quilts in this book. I have been looking for some quilt patterns to make quilts out of fabric from my kids' dresses I made years ago.
Scrappy zone, with occasional visits to the safe zone via jelly rolls, charms and layer cakes!
Thanks for the opportunity!
I'm a mix. I like the safe zone because it's easy and you know it will all look good, but I love scrappy if they all play well together!
I keep coming by your blog by way of other blogs. Today I decided to cut out the middle man and just follow you directly. :) For me? Right now I'm in the Safe Zone. I think I might be breaking out though, because I finally made a true scrap quilt and it turned out much prettier than I'd expected.
Hi!
Love the quilts!
Count me in with The Scrappy Zone as I love making one-of-a-kind quilts. I never buy more than 3 fabrics of any fabric line because I reason I can find coordinating fabrics in my healthy stash. No matchy-matchy for me.
I popped over from Nichole's blog and am really enjoying this book tour! Thanks to all!
Cheers!
I have to go with the Safe Zone because I'm a newish quilter and don't have many scraps.
Hey Darlene - I'm in the Safe Zone working toward the Scrappy Zone. Here the weather is good. We'll be in AZ in three weeks!
Oh I am the "Scrap Zone". I rarely stick with a line. And let me tell you - I love your two quilts. Especially the Tool Shed. Oh man - I want to win this book so badly! This book is amazing!
Because I'm still so new I think 'The Safe Zone' would be best to describe me. I'm from the generation where Mom drilled into my head that striped and polka dots do NOT match and belong together in any way, shape, or form so it's been VERY hard for me to overcome this teaching from my childhood days.
vburr at charter dot net
I like to coordinate my own fabrics together. I think that's half the fun og quilting. Coordinated lines obviously look great together, but not nearly as much fun as choosing my own fabrics.
It would honestly depend on my budget at the time coz if I was a bit flush, then I'd go for the safe zone, but if my funds are low, I'd have to head into the scrappy zone! Hugs Naomi
P.S. I used to be indecisive, but now I just can't seem to make my mind up!
Darlene, I prefer the Scrap Zone< but I am not above buying precuts to add variety!
I have discouvered the Scrappy method and dearly love the results.
I, too, am a Safe Zone sewist - I'm too much of a chicken to try true scrappy!
I enjoyed your question about "true scraps". I'm an "old" quilter". Thimbleberries and Jinny Beyer were the first co-ordinated lines I remember. I love the new designers and I'm glad they get recognition, but for me...I pick things that talk to me...no safe zone. It all goes. I would love to own this book! Toni
I'm a true scrapaholic, so scrappy zone for me. I love to play with all the different pieces of fabric. I'm always arranging and rearranging them. I do, however, keep my 30's scraps separate. Everything else goes into the pile.
I definitely like the scrap zone. I seldom buy precuts or several fabrics from one line. My mother taught me how to quilt and she used leftovers from clothes, etc. and those are the quilts that were passed down from my grandmother also so i guess it is in my blood!
Your quilts turned out great whichever zone you were in!
I prefer the Scrappy Zone, although I do like to have some common elements to tie it all together. I have dabbled in the Safe Zone, but sometimes find it hard to use fabrics in the line that don't appeal to me. I must be in a Stuck In The Middle Zone!
Totally Safe Zone for me, in fact I didn't only pitch a tent, I poured a foundation under that tent. :) LOL Love the coordinated bundles or jelly rolls for these, I just don't trust my judgement enough to step out of the "zone". Thank you for this chance!!
Scrappy all the way. I have yet to buy a jelly roll (gasp!).
i don't have a defined style yet as I am new but being new I guess that means I would be scrappy too becuase I take what I can get.
I'm definitely in the scrappy zone, just because that's what I have to work with! I love the coordinated lines, and it's certainly easier but I think the scrappy zone can be so much more creative and individual! No one will have a quilt quite like yours when you are scrappy!
I love scrappy quilts but as I'm not a very experienced quilter I tend to go to the SAFE ZONE.
I love scrappy quilts bue as I'm not a very expienced quilter I always end up in the SAFE ZONE.
Darlene, great interview question! I wear a size 9.5. LOL!
I LOVE the Tool Shed quilt, because The Scrappy Zone is for me.
Thanks for the chance to win the book, I just love Kim's designs. Today on my blog I'll be showing my completed Kitchen Sink quilt from her first book!
I like to play it safe so definitely safe rather than scrappy quilts in general

I kind of go back and forth. I love using precuts, but also have made many things I love with all scraps. If I were more organized with my scraps I wouldn't make such a mess and would like using them better.
I can't wait to get a copy of the book.
The scrappier the better for me.
I'm definately a member of the 'Safe Zone', I have a really difficulty time going totally scrappy. I'm trying to overcome that fear!

I prefer the safe zone. But I do have every scrap left over from about 10 years of making quilts. I can't part with them. Sometimes I use the scraps for applique but other someday I hope I can use these to make quilts. I love the look of scrap quilts but it seams so daunting to just use the scraps you have on hand. This book looks awesome!
I am in between the safe and scrappy zone and really, really trying to be scrappy!!!!
Pick me, Pick me!!!!!

I prefer to work in the safe zone. But I do have a ton of scraps from several years of quilting. I can't part with them. Sometimes the scraps get used for applique. For me, just using my scraps seems scrary. Mabye one day I'll be brave enough. This book looks awesome.
I like both safe and scrappy!
I have always tended to stay in the Safe Zone. But having seen all the beautiful quilts everyone has made, I wish I hadn't just gotten rid a heck of alot of scraps I had held onto for the last few years!
I think it depends on what kind of a mood I am in at the time. I have done both. It's amazing how well fabrics play together.
I was drawn into quilting because I love scrap quilts. I'm really in the Scrappy Zone--if no two fabrics in a quilt are from the same line? So much the better!
I have really enjoyed viewing the various blogs with interviews, pictures and info...
I love scrappy but am not super wonderful at it...I would like to make a coordinated quilt sometime with a 'line' of fabrics that go together perfectly, but I just haven't taken the plunge. I think if I had a store nearby that to visit and find inspiration would motivate me so much more than buying fabric online...
If I win the book, I just may take that plunge...I've loved the patterns that I've seen especially the cover quilt and the chain linky looking ones :)
Since I own only 3 Jelly rolls I can pretty confidently say I am in the Scrappy Zone.
I hate to say it but a collection rarely has enough variety in color, scale and print for me.
but I do admire them from afar! LOL
I am a scrappy girl myself. I find the bakeshop items are too expensive for me, and I do love to search the bargain bins for fabrics to add to my stash!
The Safe Zone is for me. I didn't save scraps. But, what I do have is a hugh stash of mostly focus fabric, not many blenders, so using my stash continues to baffle me. Although, I'm determined to use it up, even if I have to buy fabric to go with what I have.

I'm kind of feelin' scrappy zone!
Considering that I've never a true scrappy quilt, I would have to start with the Safe Zone approach and work my way to the Scrap Zone. LOL

I think I'm somewhere in between safe and scrappy. I want to be scrappy but sometimes end up safe. Thanks for a chance to win!
GOOD DAY TO YOU!
SAFE ZONE IS WHAT I USE MOST; HOWEVER I'VE USED BOTH IN THE PAST, IT KINDA DEPENDS ON WHAT I'M MAKING.
THANKS SO FOR SHARING SUCH SWEET GIVEAWAYS!

I play in both the scrappy zone and the safe zone. I hand dye some of my own fabrics, but when we lost our local fabric store, ordering coordinates online was a much easier option! Thanks for the chance to win.
I started in the 'Safe Zone', but am s l o w l y becoming more comfortable with truly scrappy. Scrappy messes with my personality type, so it'll be a while before the fully developed scrappy emerges, lol.
Thanks for the chance to enter. Interesting question and enjoyed reading the answers.
For me it is the scrappy zone but with some auditioning of fabric placement.
It sure would be wonderful to win one of these great books, they look great as I do love scrappy quilts !Thanks so much for the chance to win .
Thank you for the interview. And, thank you for the chance to win!
I prefer the safezone. And I love the book with all those gorgeous quilts:o)
I'm a Safe Zone girl, but I do mix some of my other fabrics in some of the time. I have jelly rolls just sitting & waiting for me to get a copy of this new book.
Great post, Darlene. I love the quilts you made for Kim's book. Nice work, stretching those boundaries :-) I tend to enjoy the easy way, working with fabric collections but I love the scrappy look. I am currently trying to cut up all my scraps...or most of them anyway...into useable sizes so I can work at doing some scrappy quilts. Would love to have Kim's book to help me on my way :-)
I would like to be scrappy but I always end up going with the safe zone.
I am the kitchen sink variety. The more the merrier. The greatest part about THIS book is that it gives instructions for both scrappy and full strips. What a great idea! I no longer have to add up the inches listed to see what I need for scrappy.
I'm a little bit of both, I think. I love Kim's way of making strips and storing them in boxes all ready to go. I would love to get into that habit, too.
I really prefer the safe zone. But the scrappy looks so cool. I am always afraid I can't make mine looks that good. But I am going to try branching out.
I LOVE the scrappy zone!!! You never run out of a particular fabric when making a scrappy quilt because 'anything goes' in a scrappy quilt! Just pull from your scrap stash! :) Have Kim's first book...so am hoping I win her second book!
I function best in the Safe Zone, I have a hard time creating scrappy but I hope to feel comfortable with it someday!
Loved the answers to your question. It's great that we all have our own styles and preferences. Wouldn't it be dull if we all were alike?! :-) I enjoy the freedom of scrappiness (is that a word?). I learned to work with scraps as a young person because of a limited budget. Here I am 30 years later, still with the limited budget, and really enjoying scrap work. Hoping to win the book! :-)
Scrappy! :-) Loved your post Darlene! Thanks for the fun!
I prefer variety, sometimes safe and sometimes scrappy. I would be over joyed to win a signed copy of the book.
It is interesting to see other quilters' response. For me, it is always scraps. I have never used a specific line to make a quilt, although it is tempting!
I'm definitely a scrappy quilter! I love making things that are one-of-a-kind and truly my own. It's always exciting to see how it all comes together (though I do tend to do a bit auditioning to make sure it "feels" right). LOVE Tool Shed! Wanna make it!!
I'd have to go with SAFE ZONE on this one - it's much less work and less organising using the same line. That being said I do have one box of BRIGHTS which I have had a lot of success using in string blocks.
Definitely the Scrappy Zone for me! The more mixed variety the better.
Scrappy most times. Although occasionally I go into the safe zone! :0)
I'd say Scrappy Zone most of the time, unless it's a special pattern. I seem to always pull something out of my scraps even with the safe zone.
I prefer working with scraps. I am lucky to have a quilt angel who gave me her stash of scraps when she gave up quilting. I love going through the bins and finding scraps to design a quilt around.
I love scrappy and it is much easier when you have the fabrics cut and then can just pull. Just finished a truly scrappy quilt with 20 year old fabrics and some new Moda ones as well. I am loving it!
i can't decide whether i'm a scrapper or safety first--think i'm a combo as i haven't ever made a quilt just from one fabric line, but haven't really made a totally scrappy one either. i want some overall feeling of cohesiveness usually, but sometime i'd like to try them both. your quilts are lovely
I love the look of truely scrappy quilts but am so scared to make one myself so I am a safe zone who dreams of being in the scrappy zone.
I love the idea of using precut strips.... so much faster. I want to use scraps, and actually had my mom cutting her stash down into strips, just need to do the same for myself. I wonder how the picnic quilt would look with fruits and vegetable fabrics, which I hava a lot of... Maybe if I win a book I can find out. Have a great and happy day.
I like scrappy zone myself. The repeats of patterns in the collections drive me crazy. I hate when they end up near each other in a quilt and I drive myself crazy trying to re arrange. I like using about 100 different fabrics.
I prefer the scrappy zone because that is what I have the most of. but, I sure love he Safe Zone when I can afford it!
hmmm...scrappy or safe. I thought scrappy was safe, that way there was no choosing. But, if I have to pick I guess I'll say "SAFE".
I love scrappy quilts........I love seeing them & I love making them.
Scrappy for me! I do make sure they all look good together, but I like to live dangerously.
