"A" is for Applique

Yesterday afternoon while tracing and prepping these cute baskets I was thinking.

What's your preferred method for prepping your applique projects?

Do you applique
by hand
by machine
or both (and which is your favorite method)

Thank you for stopping by - ya'll come back!

In Friendship!

I've only appliqued two or three small pieces so far and it's machine applique all the way! While I think I might enjoy hand work, a) I don't have the time and b) my eyes aren't as good as they used to be.

I do hand applique, generally needleturn, although I've been known to use a few other methods - fold seam allowance over and baste, for instance, or using a placement template (sharpie drawn on clear plastic for complex blocks).

I'm one for the hand work, love the look of the machine applique especially with the newer machines, but it takes the pleasure out of it, just my 2 cents worth.

Hand applique is my fave . . . needle turn is my current method of preference. It took me a few methods to get there because I was a little afraid of needleturn. Now I'm so glad I'm there *s*
Oh, but I'm using some machine button hole stitch with fusible for my stocking project with nice results. I think there's a method for everyone and every project. Isn't quilting grand?

Hand applique. They are so cute.

I enjoy doing fusible machine applique because I like the folk art look. I use a blanket stitch and either use all black thread or match my thread to the fabric.

Hand applique here too and I use a lot of freezer paper to cut out patterns but then I just eyeball the edge - stopped marking the lines for most of the pieces I do.

I do applique. I prefer the look of hand applique and I do enjoy doing it. If I have to do something quickly for someone I will usually do machine, buttonhole applique.

I either do the freezer paper method or the Eleanor Burns method for hand applique. I've done machine and don't like how 'stiff' it is. Needleturn is not my friend.

I love the baskets!! Where did you get the pattern?

Hugs,
nancy

I like all forms of applique but mostly do it by hand. Sometimes blanket stitch, sometimes needle turn. I also enjoy back basting applique and using freezer paper. It just depends on the pattern and what I think will look best.

I do all my applique by hand. Need to practice by machine so I can do that too. I love hand applique! I prep with freezer paper method, mostly, sometimes doing needle-turn, sometimes doing the basting through the paper.

Oh...this depends on what look I want to have on the quilt...
I do them all... ;o)
But my favourite is a prim stitching that I use on most of my "Cheri S" quilts... Then I have trouble in deciding if I like needleturn or machine blanket stitching the best...think it depends on the time i have...lol..:o)

Baskets look beautifull. I do both machine and hand and it just depends on how I want to appliquee for which I like most. For the buttonhole I like the machine for other applique I love doing it by hand.

I'm a needleturn gal. Love having that project in my hand and making the shapes come to life!

Those basket are too cute! I do the "cheater" way of applique - fusible web! I am out of the club for admitting that, aren't I?

Hand applique - I am never satisfied with how my machine applique stuff turns out. Besides, it gives me something to do while watching tv.

So far I've only done machine applique, but I am going to give hand work a try here very soon!

Oh ya I do love baskets. I prefer by hand all the way. However I'm trying to challenge myself to do some machine applique in order to get all the projects done I want. But I'm a handwork girl all the way so it's very hard to switch gears. I love needle turn, but I also use the freezer paper method with starch as well. LOVE your little baskets

Hugs - karen

I recently taught myself to do invisible machine applique using Beth Ferrier's method and love the results. It truly looks like I did it by hand and because no fusible is used, there's no stiffness. I blogged about it here with pictures: http://sewwhatsnew-carla.blogspot.com/2008/10/invisible-machine-applique.html

I like both. If it's a bed quilt I'd probably do needleturn by hand and if it's a wallhanging I'd probably do a quick steam a seam and machine stitched edge.
