Number 1

I quilted this one first because it's the oldest in the pile.

Obviously this is a Yellow Brick Road pattern and I used Folk Art Christmas III by Moda - designed by Robyn Pandolph. Yes, a long time ago!

When the Yellow Brick Road pattern was first released by Atkinson Designs everyone I knew was making one, two or a bunch. I have a friend who made one with every new bunch of fat quarters she purchased. There were so many - sigh! LOL One day she had a large bundle of fat quarters and she told me that she was going to make a king size quilt - I looked at her and told her that wasn't going to be a Yellow Brick Road, it was going to be a Yellow Brick Highway. LOL I made up my mind that I was not going to make one and I was quite stubborn about it. Another friend and I used to make the same quilts - yes identical and one day we were out shopping and saw that someone had a quilt made with this very line of fabric. Oh, it looked so pretty all folded up neat and tidy so my friend asked her to show us - it was the Yellow Brick Road. So, my friend looked at me and said "that's what we should make with our bundles of fabric" - I looked at her, rolled my eyes and said, "No, I told you I'm not making a Yellow Brick Road quilt, but you can feel free to do it". Well, there was no way she was going to make one unless I did because she feared I'd do something she'd like better. LOL Anyway, she begged and begged and then said "if you make this one with me, I'll buy you lunch". LOL - I finally relented and said, "OK, but just one". If you read my blog then you know that there have been other Yellow Brick Road quilts but this one was the first. As I was working with this quilt the past couple of days I couldn't help but smile and occasionally snicker as I remembered how this quilt came to be. :-) I really excited that it's finally quilted and look forward to enjoying it this holiday season.

How many Yellow Brick Road quilts have you made? :-)

Now, I need to decide which flimsy to quilt next. HMMMM!

Thank you for letting me share my Yellow Brick Road story! I appreciate that you stop by - please come again soon!

In Friendship!

I have made zero YB quilts. Not a fan. But I must admit this one is quite lovely in these colorways.

i have made quite a few... this is my go-to quilt, although i change things up... i get all the big center parts done and the skinny sides i mix the long ones and the ones with the tiny square to make it a bit more dynamic. not to mention, i don't sew the strip on the right side all the time... i put them on the left too...

Your quilt is beautiful! I have had that pattern for a while but just can't decide what to do it with. I think you have just motivated me to make one. Thanks!!

I've only made one baby quilt. What a fun story and memory of making that quilt. It's gorgeous and I love the colours. Is that Cooper trying to get in the picture?

I'm afraid I'm not the greatest fan of YBR's either but I do love this one.Who knows, like you, if I find the right fabrics I might be tempted.

Love and hugs Gina xxx

I thought I'd be the only one, but I see I'm not. I've never made one, although I do like the pattern, just never found it at any of the stores I frequent. Is that a smidge of dog or cat in the corner of the photo?

I've not made a YBR quilt as I'm not a fan of them -- but this one in those fabrics is gorgeous! Might persuade me into making one. Might.

This is a beautiful quilt. I love the fabrics you used for it.
I have to admit...I've made 6 Yellow Brick Road quilts so far. Unless I lost count. I'm a little embarrassed about it, but it's a really fun and easy quilt to make, and if you want to make a complicated looking quilt in just a couple of days, this is the one!

Like several other commenters I have never made a YBR quilt. They look nice but I tend to use scraps for my quilts and I never really buy a 'fabric line' for a quilt.

This quilt is very lovely and I am proud of you for your goal of finishing up a bunch of flimsies. I am working on making a bunch of flimsies right now using up scraps but have quite a few that need the finishing part!

I've made quite a few...for holidays, with flannel, and just because. I actually might make one more since I saw one with the blocks set on point once...I've always wanted to try that! Loved your story!

Confession--- never liked the Yellow brick road pattern.... Swore I'd never make one when the craze went around. Basically it was because the pattern cover didn't do it justice. I finally had some flannels and gave it a shot--- totally loved it. Even made a baby quilt after that. Love yours. Definitely a testimony that the fabric makes the difference. Thanks for sharing.

what a pretty christmas quilt! funny story! for me, it was the Turning twenty pattern. seems like everyone was making it and i just decided i wasn't going to be a 'follower' and make one like all the rest of the quilters. its more fun to do things a little differently sometimes, huh?

Three too many. LOL

What a fun story. I don't know whether I'm proud or sad to have never made a yellow brick road LOL.

I have only made one, it was my second quilt, and I gave it away as a charity quilt. They are good to make for quicky quilt gifts though.

This is a great quilt. I haven't made any, for the same reason you hadn't. I think it is a great quilt, but everyone does this one. I have the pattern though - they taught it in a class my daughter took - so there is a YBR in the house.

I have made only 3...one was all flannel front and back and it's mine! Your quilt is beautiful.

The Folk Art Christmas groups were some of my very favorites. I've made 1 YBR in my quilting life,it was a sample for the shop. I had lots of customers though, like your friend who made lots and lots and lots of them. What a fun story.

Woo Hoo!! One down that's awesome big sis! That's a great story. I have never made a yellow brick road, I wasn't quilting when that craze went around :) I may have to add that pattern to my list :)

I swore up, down and sideways I'd never make one...and I've made 3 or 4. :o) They're nice to give as high school and college graduation gifts, so that's what I've done!

I was at my quilt shop event a week ago and one of the teachers said that Yellow Brick Road had to be the most successful pattern made EVER! I have not made one of these but most everyone I know has!

I made one and helped my friend make one (her first quilt.)

Not happy with either one. Is there a tip on fabric selection? All fabrics the same value? Mine has blobs of lights and my friend's has blobs of darks. Just too random for me I guess. But very fast and easy to cut and sew.

Believe it or not I haven't made one. I have the pattern, just never did it. LOL

I have made one, and taught my club to make them as well. But one was enough for me!

Love it! It's such a warm and inviting quilt!
I haven't yet made a yellow brick road quilt but it looks similar to the ones we made for Quilt Bee day.

That's a funny story :) I've never tried that pattern but of course I've seen it everywhere! I think with this kind of pattern, a lot depends on the fabrics, and your's is gorgeous. I still love all those old Robyn Pandolph prints.

I love this quilt. The colors go with my house. very pretty.

I've made one. It was kitted with fabric that I really wanted. It was fast and easy, for sure and I keep the pattern on hand just in case I need something quick, quick, quick, but I'm not a huge fan.

So far I have made 3 YBR quilts. I love how quickly they go together, but I am a hand quilter and have had to really think to come up with a quilting pattern for them. I just love yours. Those fabrics really make it beautiful.

Love the story. And, yes, so many people have made the "Yellow Brick Road" in every color combination I can think of and it always seems to look terrific. I have never made one myself though I had intentions for the last several years.

I have made so many yellow brick roads I lost count. When I worked at the shop that always the go to quilt!!!! My daughter in law and her friend will be starting their first quilt and that's the pattern we are going to use!

well after reading the comments I feel a little ignorant. Maybe the yellow brick road pattern craze was before I did as much international blogging as I had never seen it before. Was tempted to say, Oh I will work it out and my head started to ache...lol. So I have found it on line here in Oz and it is ordered and now I must make it rather than let it rot amongst the patterns.
It certainly has tempted me.

Great story, beautiful quilt, and I LOVE the quilting! It's the perfect addition to the fabric and pattern. I have yet to make a yellow brick road, although I think I own the pattern. I'll have to see if I do have it......
1 down, 4 to go!
H'moosies!!

Oh yeah! I have to admit I have made 5 of those Yellow Brick Road quilts. I made them for my daughter's friends for their high school graduation. I did make my self one too. They all turn out so neat.

Yes I made a few yellow brick road quilts. With some fabrics it just works well. And my first one was with robin pandolph xmas fabrics. Now I have to go see if I have a pic!

Sherry said...

I've made a few of them. I have gotten into an "easy quilt" phase. I've been buying those crazy Moda charm packs & making disappearing 9 patch quilts like crazy..from every line of fabric they have charm packs from...geez! LOL Actually, making lots to give away for Christmas gifts but I'm afraid I won't want to tackle a triangle again. LOL I love your quilt!

Threeundertwo said...

This is my go-to pattern for quick baby quilts. I love those Pandolph fabrics, and I still have a stash of them. Love your quilt.

Kim said...

You know, I'm still stuck on the "I don't much care for YBR quilts and their progeny." Seems several patterns have spawned from this one in recent years too. Your is pretty though! And I have some of those fabrics in my stash! Still, I have actually made one, and you'll probably be interested to hear about it. Remember Diane B? She had the fabrics picked out and had just started making one for her son in law in his college colors/fabrics when she passed away. I told her daughter I'd finish piecing the top, and I did. That was a labor of love, and I thought about her with each stitch.

I've made one yellow brick road. It was when the pattern first came out, and it was a kit. That is when I learned that I don't like kits. I usually like to pick my own fabrics, but it makes up really nice in fat quarter bundles.

I think I'm going to have to go through my fat quarter bundles and make a yellow brick road! Yours is beautiful.
