What's in your sewing box? (sounds like the commercial "what's in your wallet" - LOL)

I love to go sew with friends a couple of times a month but when I first started doing that I would gather up my sewing tools/toys and throw them in a box or bag. You guessed it, I always forgot something. Ugh! So, I bought duplicates of many things and now my sewing box stays packed and ready to go. I use an oversized pencil box to haul the goodies. I would like to have something classier than the oversized pencil box but I haven't found "the" container. Last night I sewed with my friends and looked around at their "sewing boxes" and wondered what do they carry and why.

So, now I'm here asking you -

* what's in your sewing box/bag and why?

*what type of box or bag do you use and why?

Thought for today: "Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away".

Gratitudes:

Cooler morning due to overnight thunderstorms and puddles in the streets and on the sidewalks

I keep pretty much the same things you do. Usually some applique needles and a thimble just in case the mood strikes me! I have a similar plastic box for mine, too. I've tried different things and this works best.

I currently do not have a "portable sewing box" - but I probably would do the same as you - use a small plastic box. I use the same plastic boxes to store my basting pins and few other items that need to be corraled.

I go to a weekly class at my local shop, so I have a fairly large container with a lift out tray and handles. I can store my project in the bottom of the container. Inside the lift out tray I keep a ruler, rotary cutter, scissors and pincushion. I also have two smaller boxes to hold extra needles, threads, thimble, floss, glue, a sheet of freezer paper, breath mints *s*, and some coins. Some of the gals chide me on my stash of supplies -- but they always know where to go if they have left something behind.

I carry with me nearly everything you have. Did you have a tape measure there? One thing i want to add is a pencil sharpener. I don't know how many times i or someone else has needed one and nobody in the group had one.

Mine doesn't have much that yours doesn't. I have several spools of thread - gray, black, beige, and whatever is left over from last time. =) I only have one marking pencil, a gold Caran d'ache watercolor. It's visible on everything but yellow and I almost never use yellow. I have to buy them at the art store. I have a needlebook and one of those little pin cushions that's in a soda lid and fits over the thumb.

The plastic box is very practical. I have a wooden box which has a handle on the end and the top slides out. It has a piece of sandpaper on top of it, for applique. I have these boxes in 3 sizes, because a friend's father made them. =)

Hi Darlene, looks like your sewing box is well stocked.
I use a Rubbermaid shoe box size for my sewing box that I take along. Pretty much the same as yours and the others, but I do keep a small spiral notebook in mine, colored pencils, a sharpener..some of the sticky spots for ruler backs, post a notes, and a calculator.
I also have bandaids in a couple of sizes, pain relievers, safety pins, and due to the "eye" stuff, one or two of those sterile water Refresh tubes. Oh, and a spare name tag..LOL

Great stuff...I think the only other things I have are post-it-notes and those "tag a quilt" tags that are numbered by row and block. I have a set at home and a set in my "take to class box". They are wonderful.

Wow. I must be the 'light packer' here! ;o)
My little portable sewing 'box' (which isn't even a box at all) has: a pair of scissors, a few applique needles, sewing needles, needle threader and thread along with my cut out fabric pieces. That's it! I love hand sewing...it's so portable.
I have another little sewing bag for my hand quilting and it has my thread, Thread Heaven, needles, scissors, thimble and needle threader. With those two little bags in hand (and they both could fit in one hand), I'm good to go! :oD

Good question...

I have a Pfaff bag that I got as a present when we purchased my sewing machine. in it are scissors, rotary cutters, the feet for my machine, thread & I am sure some other stuff...

I have 2 antique (early plastic) sewing boxes - one is currently empty, the other has my hand applique project - so it has snips, thread, needles, thimble. However I took out the thimble when I packed an applique project that did not need the snips for my trip & I have yet to put things back... that bag had similar stuff...

I probably could/should get a better system going, but I am living in a "part of my stuff" is packed scenario for quite a while now. & When I did not have "X" with me I bought another... & when I bought a replacement, I did not discard the original...

Hopefully with the move, I will be able to pare down.

Oh, boy! I posted a photo on my blog of my sewing box. I am a traveling stitcher and almost never leave the house without The Box! I think I exhibit obsessive compulsive behavior regarding my sewing box, but that's okay, right?!

That's such a smart idea to keep a box with duplicates. I am always misplacing something when I move things around...
