#10 - Nice Day with Harvest Home

I really believe that every quilt tells a story - well this quilt has a long story. Go ahead grab something to drink - I'll wait. :-)

Comfy? Here we go.......................

When I was planning and buying fabric to make all the quilts I tried not to be a copy cat and make the quilts like the ones in the book. However, I really like Carrie's small Schnibbles quilt made with Harvest Home by Moda so I asked her if she would mind if I copied. She didn't mind one bit; in fact she gave me the layer cakes I needed. WooHoo! :-)

I was fat, dumb and happy as I was separating and cutting the layer cakes. Deep in my stash I found a fabulous background tone on tone from an older Blackbird Designs line that I knew would work nicely. I did a quick read through the instructions, started cutting and made four blocks - wahoo!!!! It suddenly occurred to me that I needed to set aside all the blue prints to use in the setting triangles. I was now ready to sew like the wind - I piled four layer cakes and made the first diagonal cut and then a second diagonal cut - screeeeeeeeccccccccccccccchhhhhh - there wasn't suppose to be a second diagonal cut. ACK!!!!! I sewed the halves back together hoping that they would work - they did. Whew!

Wait, what's that yardage sitting on the end of my cutting table? OH NO!!!!! That's the background fabric I was going to use for the 1/2 square triangles forgetting I didn't have enough of the one from Blackbird Designs - OMG, OMG, I've already made four blocks - ACK!!!

At this point I'm no longer feeling fat, dumb & happy - just FAT & DUMB! It's very obvious that the Quilting Gods are punishing me! Why? I don't know! :-)

I refused to be deterred - onward!!! I made # blocks with the first background print and used the other one for the final 8 blocks. Not sure I like them together but that's the way it is.

I got all the blocks laid out on my design wall. I needed to cut and sew the setting & corner triangles. I grabbed the blue layer cakes ready to start cutting - I needed 14 but I only had 13!!! OH NO! Feeling very FAT & DUMB - what did I do to anger the Quilting Gods? Huge Sigh!!!

Again I refused to be deterred - onward!!! I went digging deep and found a piece of blue Blackbird Designs fabric - not an exact match but I settled. Sigh!!!

It's far from perfect but it's finished. :-)

This was going to be the final Big Schnibble because I thought it would be fun to wish you a Nice Day. It just didn't feel right so here it is. LOL

There are several morals to this story but I'm sure you already know what they are. LOL

Plan C with American Primer

I showed this one in early July so it's 'old news'. :-) I purchased a fat quarter bundle of American Primer by Moda a couple of years ago and cut my own Honey Bun (1 1/2" strips) to make a quilt called Dutch Treat. Obviously I had lots leftover - enough to cut my own Layer Cakes to make this quilt. :-) I remember snickering while making this one because it was my first experience with the huge flying geese units (they are BIG when you use 10" squares) so I started referring to them as "man eating flying geese" - LOL

My grandsons, Seth & Eli go back to school today - sigh! Seth is growing up so fast - 8th grade! And, Eli is headed to 1st grade - bigger sigh!

#8 - X-Rated with Frolic

This one is old news - you saw it in May but it may be 'new' to some. I saw this one when the book was released and it immediately spoke to me. I knew instantly I HAD to make it with Frolic by Moda. I ordered two Layer Cakes and got busy.

#7 - Little Red in Fresh Cottons

This is Little Red made with Fresh Cottons by Moda. I showed it to you a couple of weeks ago without borders. I really like the yummy caramel brown border. :-) That's our buddy Cooper!

#6 - Hot Cross with Looking Back

Now we're talking!!! LOL I hadn't planned to use Looking Back by Moda for Hot Cross but I'm really, really glad I did. I'm super crazy about this quilt. I didn't have any Looking Back yardage for the inner border so I did a little digging in my stash and found something by Kansas Troubles that worked perfectly. Gotta keep the integrity of all 12 quilts being ALL Moda. LOL I don't plan to leave the black corner stones in the outer border - I failed to keep a print layer cake square when I was cutting. I'll purchase a fat quarter next time I'm out and about.

#5 - Bennington enjoys the 12 Days of Christmas

The first time I saw 12 Day of Christmas by Kate Spain for Moda I was instantly smitten. I'm receiving the Designer Mysery blocks every month from The Fat Quarter Shop featuring The 12 Days of Christmas but I wanted to do something to be enjoyed this Christmas. The colors are vivid, bright and refreshing. I used the snowflake white tone-on-tone for the background and it does look a bit 'flat' but I believe it'll come alive when it's quilted.

*#4 - Open Season with Botany

As I was searching for layer cakes to make the Big Schnibbles quilts I kept going back to Botany - the colors were intriguing to me. Again, a bit outside my box. Dipping my toe in the water to work with fabrics outside my comfort zone has been fun during this challenge. However, I do plan to stay on dry land - I do like my comfort zone. LOL

We're a quarter of the way through - are you getting bored? I couple of weeks ago I showed Plan C & Little Red - I don't want to bore you and repeat them but if you want to see them again I'll put them in one blog post (Little Red has it's borders now - LOL).

#3 - Scratch made with Oz

With a lot of encouragement from Carrie Nelson I decided to use Oz to make Scratch. Oz is way out of my comfort zone. This was my challenge so why not challenge myself to use something a bit different from my norm. :-) I'm thrilled that I trusted her judgement because I love it. I ordered a different color for the setting triangles and borders but as I was working on the 4 patches and rails I decided I HAD to use black. I'm extremely pleased with the results.

#2 - McGuffey has Breakfast at Tiffany's

*

I worked on this quilt the day after Mr Daze had his angiogram and we had to 'lay low' - it's one of those fast, easy, down and dirty projects. Before you know it - poof you're done. LOL I used a Breakfast at Tiffany's Jelly Roll and Charm Pack but then I didn't have four matching 5" cornerstones to use in the outer border. So, I pulled a red leftover 10" square from Millhouse Inn - done! :-)

There's really been a song in my heart and smile on my face in recent weeks Why? Well, I've been working really hard on a self-challenge and having so much fun! Truly sewing like my hair's on fire. LOL

How many times have we looked through a new quilt book and said "oh I'd love to make every quilt in this book"? Then we look through it again and again and dismiss one or two and in the end sometimes we don't even make one of the quilts in the book. LOL

Since this book was released I've said over and over again, "I want to make every quilt in this book"

On Monday, July 5, I was chatting with Mr Daze about how much fun it would be to make all the quilts in Carrie Nelson's Schnibbles Times Two book. I explained that I'd already made two but there were 10 more quilts to do and didn't know whether or not it was a goal I could achieve. He looked at me and said, "go for it and enjoy". That evening I chatted with the Queen of Schnibbles and she encouraged me to start sewing! We discussed a variety of Layer Cakes & such and Tuesday I placed an order for several Layer Cakes and yardages.

My orders started arriving and I got busy cutting & sewing.
*
Every day, for the next 12 days I'll be posting a new Big Schnibble - I hope you'll enjoy reading about my Big Schnibble journey. By the way all the quilts have been made entirely with Moda fabrics!

July Schnibbles

I kept procrastinating about making the July's Schnibbles quilt, Joy Luck because I couldn't decide on fabric. Silliness, I know! Last night I walked into my sewing room at approximately 9:00PM and dug out two Blush charm packs and some Bella yardage. Started cutting and then sewed until 4:00AM this morning - LOL - gotta love a second wind. :-) I just finished the outer border so it's done - woohoo!!! Bring on the August assignment - I'm RED-DEE!!!

I had a birthday earlier this week and a few surprises landed in my mailbox :-) From Carol a sweet Longaberger Basket, fabulous Dovo embroidery scissors and adorable pincushion & cute pins. Thank you bunches, Carol. :-)


A birthday surprise from Mary. A framed wool basket (yummy) and sweet red work pattern. Thank you bunches, Mary. :-)


And another birthday surprise from Carol - two Lumiere de Noel charm packs and some dots that will be fabulous background. The charm packs were wrapped in the dots and tied with the sweet ribbons. I didn't want to unwrap them - sweet packaging. LOL Thank you bunches, Carol.

Last but not least the sneak peek of the flimsy I finished earlier this week. Remember it's my evil twin, Evilena who makes me do this..............bahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!

AOL & Me

Recently I encountered a problem - grrrr! Yesterday I read through quite a few blogs leaving comments (sometimes just lurking). Then I was sifting through and attempting to respond to my long list of e-mails from comments and such. After a few minutes AOL stopped sending my mail - they have decided that I'm a 'spammer'. LOL We've tried to figure out why but to no avail. Yahoo refused to deliver my e-mails and I received quite a few as 'returned mailed". So, we've decided that I needed to delete all my 'saved e-mails' and start anew. If you've left a comment with a question and didn't get a response from me please accept my apology and send it again. And, I've also been receiving many comments on my blog from so many that are set for 'no reply' - sadly I can't answer your questions or just say thank you for stopping by. Please set your blog to show your e-mail address - you'll be glad you did. If you don't want to use your regular e-mail address then set up a new one just for your blog.

Raggedy & Friends

We have a winner!!!! Carol from Brown Quilts 4 Me - come on down!!!!

Do you know Kaaren at The Painted Quilt? She's one of the most talented bloggers around - I sit in awe of her talent. Sigh! :-) She designed and made the cutest Raggedy & Friends quilt and starting today is offering it as a free BOM on her blog. I was so excited when she announced it and couldn't wait for July 20. teehee There will be a new block or blocks on the 20th of every month until April 2011. SWEET!!!! :-)

I've downloaded and printed the first two blocks with plans to trace later today. I'm anxious to start stitching. :-)

I'm looking for someone to be my "Raggedy Friend". I plan to start stitching this sweet project for me and a "Raggedy Friend".

P.S. I don't do perfect stitchery but I do enjoy it. I've been stitching the Snowbound free BOM by Bunny Hill Designs since January for Terry & Kelly and they seem to be pleased with my work. :-)

What a Waste!

Yes, I know I've probably discussed this with you before but I've forgotten everything you told me. Bear in mind, I've been blogging over 4 years, I'm 4 years older and I have lots of new talented bloggy friends. :-)

Look at that mess - I've been using snippets to start & stop all my seams when I'm sewing. I've decided it's a waste of thread and effort. Sigh! Many of you use a 'leaders and enders' system to make second blocks - what's your method for getting organized? Would you please share some tips with me?

Charming Girls Quilt Club

I love being a member of the Charming Girls Quilt Club and I can't believe it's already been a year - a fun year!

New year - new club goals. WooHoo! Thank you Kelly for making time to facilitate this fabulous club. :-)

We're not setting monthly goals - now we're setting goals for two months at a time. And, it's not just about quilting and such - it's about so much more Works for me! :-)

July and August Goals

A theme for us is "SELF CARE" as well as quilting and such. I'm going to try to incorporate "self care" into my quilting. I love to sew - I'm a processor - for me it's about doing and staying busy! I find myself holding back from sewing because I get asked on a very regular basis why I sew so much. Why do I have such an urge to make so many quilts? What am going to do with them? Etc. I hold back because I'm made to feel that I have to apologize for having a hobby that I'm truly passionate about. Yes, I know I'm the only one that can control my feelings but I was raised in the "Church of Perpetual Guilt" so ......... (well, you get the idea - LOL). So part of my "SELF CARE" is to work harder at just enjoying everything I love to do without feeling that I have to explain myself. It's all part of my 'seeking acceptance' personality quirk.

I have big plans - huge - really big - I plan to SEW LIKE THE WIND! Ya'll ready for ME? LOL

I will continue to work on my stitchery projects - gotta have something to do while I watch baseball.

I will work very hard to keep up with my Block of the Month projects.

I spent last Saturday pre-cutting some projects. You know I can be very prolific when I spend time precutting.

The Power of Prayer

is Amazing!

After a very long and exhausting day on Tuesday we came home with very happy hearts (no pun intended). It appears my man's BIG heart has a small problem that the doctor believes will be fine with a prescription. Ron had a triple by-pass 12 years ago and all the by-passes are clear and in excellent shape. I'll bet you heard our sighs of relief worldwide. Sigh! He has to lay low for a couple of days and then back to see the doctor next week.

Mr Daze, our family and I appreciate your prayers, good thoughts and kind words - thank you so much!

And, now back to my regularly scheduled sewing! Woohoo! :-)

Plans Change!

I was going to do a blog post about incoming and outgoing mail i.e. surprises arriving from friends & July Snowbound blocks heading out to Kelly & Terry. I spent Saturday afternoon having a major cutting frenzy. I had grand plans to show you the piles of fabric I cut for four projects with plans to do some serious sewing!

Instead

I'm here to ask for good thoughts and prayers for my man, Mr Daze (Ron). He's having an angiogram tomorrow afternoon because there's a problem with his BIG heart that needs to be identified. I'll spare you all the details because they don't matter - we've been dealt a challenge and we need your thoughts and prayers.

This evening I plan to sew - need to keep my mind occupied!
