Flimsies, Quilting and Bindings, OH MY!

I’m sharing the pictures of my “flimsies” that need to be quilted – one picture is those with backings and the other is those without backings. Sigh! When I took the pictures there was a total of 94 to be quilted and then I added three more – grand total 97. Bigger Sigh! LOL (yes, I’m a processor). Now, one of my goals for 2007 is to get busy quilting most of those and hopefully others that I make through the year.

I quilted one before I left on my trip to Texas and this week I’ve quilted two more. One is Lucky Stars by Atkinson Designs with Kaffe Fasset fabrics (not my usual taste but had to make at least one quilt with his fabrics) and the other is a very simple Yellow Brick Road, also, by Atkinson Designs. Once again I don’t remember when I made these but it has to be at least three years ago.

When I finish a “flimsy”, I will make my binding and piece my backing fabric. Sometimes I don’t have the backing but might have the binding, etc. So, the last picture is one box of bindings ready to go on all those “flimsies” when they grow up and become actual quilts.

By the way, “flimsy” is a word that Norma uses for quilt tops and I’ve adopted it, too. I like it better than UFO. Norma, I hope you don’t mind!?!?!?!?!?

I’m almost finished with another chocolate bunny – will post that picture tomorrow!

I don't mind you using the term, flimsy at all! In fact anyone who has that many quilt tops pieced that are waiting to be quilted has "earned" the right to call them what ever she wants! *LOL* Wow those are stacks! I love the idea of piecing the back and preparing the binding as soon as you are done piecing the top. I usually stop after the flimsy stage and by the time the thing is quilted I have lost track of what the binding will be. You are very organized! Keep up with the inspiration for the rest of us!

I'm laughing at your big piles. Why - because you make me feel so much better only having a couple to do. I am calling mine flimsies too because to me they are a lot more finished than a UFO is.

Darlene is so good to read that you are going to quilt some of those "flimsies" this year. Even if you only get a few done it will be an achievement. I will be cheering you on.

I prefer the word flimsies too. UFO makes them sound rather large and unwieldy! Looking at you pile of flimsies has made me feel a bit better.

At least you have flimsies... I have "units" & "pieces" and on rare occasions "blocks" very few are actual tops!

"not my usual taste but had to make at least one quilt with his fabrics"

This sounds so much like me, except it was Robyn Pandolf!

I love you collection of bindings. I have found that I must set my binding aside, lest it get used in some othe project. I'm glad to hear you are tackling your 'flimsies' Oh what a wonderful collection of quilts you are going to have. I'm so excited to see them come to life.

Gasp! Thud!!

Okay, just to get this out of the way, I have dibbies on numbers 8, 71, 63, 54 and 29. Can't wait to see them! :) (See, I told you I was taking lessons from you! LOL)

I've fallen a bit behind in piecing bindings and backings the moment I finish a top. At least the binding strips are cut. Backings are the worst for me!

Good job, Darlene! You're amazing!

(Hugs)

I think Norma is right. I like the word Flimsy too..........

I put a picture of your stacks on the bulletin board in my studio. I am beginning to whittle my stack down. Thanks for the encouragement

Darlene I gasped too! I am glad I only have 10 flimsies but there is this little nagging feeling that I may have ignored a UFO somewhere. I have memories of having a group of ladies that got together and I had them all sign a block.....hmmm... Hope you set a goal on finishing some flimsies and meet it!

WOW doesn't seem sufficient. Is there a bigger word? GADZOOKS maybe?

Cheering (and wishing my UFOs were all flimsies)

Oh my goodness! That is one big stack of flimsies waiting to be quilted. I'm feeling much better about my stack now. LOL!

Congratulations on the ones you've finished. They both look very nice.

Oh my goodness - I had no idea you had so many tops that needed quilting! Makes me feel really lucky with my stack of only 35. Are you sure you like all of these well enough to finish them? I'm afraid some day we'll find a notice in the paper reading "quilter is smothered when giant stack of unfinished tops falls on her and she is unable to crawl free".

That is a big OH MY alright. Really impressive. I have to show that to my husband - he's always saying I'm the worst person for my stack of "flimsies" - He will be impressed - and it might take a little heat off me!! LOL

Good luck with your goal - you will have a wonderful stack of quilts when they are finished. And if they can't all get finished - some future generation can do it (thats my motto).

I have a friend who claims "if its a top, its a quilt"! She also claims that in Tahiti they don't back their quilts...too HOT! So just LOOK at all the Tahitian quilts! You GO girl!

I don't quite as many flimsies as you do. But I'm hopsing to learn machine quilting this year so I can so I can get some of projects done.

Congratulations on two big finishes!
I agree with Veronica - amazing that you have it all in one place. My UFOs are scattered everywhere - quilt tops, sandwiched quilts, quilt blocks, fabric to make quilt blocks, are in so many places, nobody can figure out how many there actually are - and I think I'd like to keep it that way!
