The Good

Remember this sweet flower/pinwheel? I've finally finished hand appliquing all the blocks - woohoo! Now, I need to decide on sashing, corner stones and borders. This is called Petal Play A Graceful Stitch (Denise Sheehan).
The Bad :-(

I've been in a major funk so I've been a bad blogger - please forgive me and know that I'm trying to push past it.

The Ugly

I've been doing a little sewing. I finished this earlier today and I'm not happy with it - aarrgghhh! The fabric (Cotton Blossoms by Moda) is beautiful and the pattern (Cake Walk by Me & My Sister Designs) is terrific but together they are not a good combination. I used a Jelly Cake (Jelly Roll & Layer Cake). I guess done is better than perfect. :-)

Sweet Cupcakes!

I participated in Sharon's Cupcake Swap and packages have arrived and been opened! My box from my swap partner Dora arrived a while ago but I refused to enjoy it until after I mailed her box to her. LOL By the way, Dora is a friend of Sharon's and doesn't have a blog - this made it a bit difficult for me because I didn't know much about her.

The picture shows all the goodies Dora sent to me. The super cute little quilt, labels, a notepad, sugar sprinkles sitting on top of the box holding the quilt :-) and a yummy cake mix from the Barefoot Contessa. She tucked a little goodie in the cupcake card - an adorable teapot tea bag holder. We duplicated one little thing - the cupcake cups. LOL Dora, thank you so much!

The next picture shows the goodies I sent to Dora and I believe she was pleased. :-)
I hope that you'll take a close look at the cupcake pincushion - there's a pin with a cupcake on top.

Why I Blog????

I picked up the Autumn 2008 issue of "Artful Blogging" last week. A friend raves about this magazine every time a new issue is released but it's out of stock when I look for it. I have not read it from cover to cover instead enjoying flipping through it haphazardly and stopping here and there.

I stopped on a article about Amanda Soule www.soulemama.com and I have to quote a snippet that she wrote because it struck a chord with me and I hope it will with you, too: (I hope she doesn't mind that I have quoted her)

"I think often of the women storytellers before us, and the many ways in which their stores were told -- a chat with a neighbor over coffee; a quilting bee or knitting circle; reading groups. A community of blogs feels much like that to me -- it's like an ongoing conversation we have over tea as friends. It's never the whole story, and it never feels the same -- sometimes the conversation is light and silly, and sometimes it's heartfelt and serious, and sometimes, for whatever reason, we keep a lot of things to ourselves. Sometimes, we don't have much to say at all, except to share an image and a moment in silence. Buzzing Around!

I've been quite busy the past few days and little play time. I haven't touched my sewing machine since last Friday but I have managed to do a little hand applique while watching the D'backs. Needless to say I have nothing quilty to blog about.

But.....................

I do have something cute, adorable and sweet to tell you about. Recently I received a birthday box from Nan filled with lots of goodness. The pretty box had two sunflower candleholders (hey where's the other one?). Then I found a notepad and Nan's newest pattern (more about that in a bit). So, I sent Nan an e-mail to say Thank you bunches and bunches and she mentioned Miss Bea Happy Wabbit - Who????? I had no idea what she was talking about. That prompted a telephone call and she sent me scurrying to the original box and wrapped in tissue was Miss Bea Happy Wabbit with a HUGE TAG attached to her leg. Written on the tag "Hewwo! My name is Bea Happy Wabbit, and I would love to live with you! May I PLEASE? Bunny Hugs, Bea". I couldn't believe I missed her in the box but she was a wonderful surprise. So, Miss Bea Happy Wabbit has joined Thimbles, Joy & Miss Millie in my sewing room. I've been hearing lots of noises when I'm out of the room so I'm afraid of what they are ALL plotting. LOL You know they can be quite devious - cute but devious. :-)

Nan's going to launch her new pattern design business, Nannie's Quilt Patch, very soon. Her newest adorable pattern is called "That's MY Name". Visit Nan's blog and ask her about her patterns!

I Did It!

Oh my goodness you absolutely have to give me a huge WOOHOO!!!!!!!

These cute 'baskets' have been popping up in some of my favorite haunts and I've adored them. I'm bagophobic so I thought I couldn't make one. Well, color me wrong - look at my little cutie. Oh, if you look close there are a few boo-boos but what the heck - I learned from those boo-boos and now want to make another one or two (maybe three or four - LOL) Stephanie is seriously addicted and Nanette made some in a variety of sizes. Thanks for the inspiration and encouragement, Ladies!

Keeping Up!

Block #3 - "Peace in Flight" designed by Joanna Figueroa (www.figtreequilts.com) arrived yesterday afternoon and I'm excited to say that it's done. WooHoo!!!!!! :-)

I showed you the first two blocks recently but I failed to tell you more about them. This is a Designer Mystery Block of the Month by The Fat Quarter Shop.

Block #1 - "Cross Stitch" was designed by Brendle Riddle (www.acornquiltingandgiftcompany.com)

Block #2 - "Star Struck" was designed by Sandy Gervais (www.piecesfrommyheart.net).

There will be a total of 12 blocks and the finishing pattern has also been designed by Brenda Riddle.

Now I will wait for September for Block #4.

Reasons to Smile!

#1 - I spent time prepping wedges, making background and center fabric decisions and smiling when I laid out this first block. When I was sitting with my needle and thread stitching away I started snickering because I suddenly realized that I was truly smiling as I was working. :-)

#2 - Made a huge decision in my real life quilting world about my group particiation that I'm very at peace/piece with. I was a little sad that I didn't get any feedback and kind words in return. That's OK because it really was the right decision for me as I had been seeing the group through rose colored glasses. :-)

#3 - Realizing how much I've missed doing handwork and making decisions to get back to it in a very serious way.

August - Done!

The August block of the 4 Seasons Primitive Stitchery from The Country Loft arrived yesterday.

Here's the sequence of events:

DH walks in with envelope
I tear open the envelope
Pull out the background fabric
Press the background fabric
Trace the design
Stitch while watching my Dbacks beat the Pirates :-)

Fast forward to this evening.............
Stitch while watching my Dbacks beat the Pirates, again.
Press finished stitchery
Assemble block

Now........wait till September for next block.

Color me excited!

My sister went home yesterday so life is back to normal in our home. It's time to settle down and do something serious with a needle and thread. :-) All the inspiration in blogland truly boggles my mind. I want to do it ALL. Sigh! :-)

Totally caught up with the assembly of the Primitive Four Seasons BOM from The Country Loft. Now I'm anxiously waiting for this month's block.

25 black and white nine patches for a new project (OK, I'm only showing you three but all 25 are completed) The blocks are fussy and a bit time consuming so it might be a few days before I'm ready to show & tell.

I hope that you've had a blissful Saturday, as well. Tomorrow we're having breakfast with friends but I'm hoping for more sewing room bliss later.

A Birthday Box!

First let me say thank you, thank you, thank you for all the birthday wishes you left for me. I appreciate it very much!

I had a terrific birthday with my family. My wonderful daughter, Kris cooked my favorites for dinner and then we had cheesecake for dessert - YUMMY! We spent the evening laughing and carrying on while everyone (except me) played with the Wie. Wonderful birthday treats and a huge surprise (although I can't show you any pics because my camera batteries are dead) - anyway there was an adorable mug with cupcakes, a cupcake candle and a new flat screen TV with built in DVD player for my sewing room. WooHoo!!!

The picture shows the treats I found in a box I received from Wendy. I love, love the wallhanging and I need to find "the" spot to hang it in my sewing room. Beautiful Mrs. March's fabrics in blues and browns; an embroidery pattern; a note pad and Twizzlers (I love Twizzlers and Wendy remembered)

There has been absolutely no time for sewing and such - it's been weeks since I've spent serious time with my sewing machine. Sigh! LOL I haven't even taken time to prep some handwork. All work and no play makes for a cranky ME. :-)

This is "Sister's Choice", the latest Shenandoah Album Novel by Emilie Richards and as I was reading last night I came upon something I had to share with all of you. I won't ruin the blot, etc.

Here's Grace's response: "Yes, indeed. That's a question you never have to ask a quilter. There are quilts in our heads, quilts in the way we pile fabric on our shelves, quilts on our design walls, under the needles on our sewing machines. Quilts waiting to be bound. Always quilts. Some of us will die planning the next one. We won't even notice the final breath"

This is so incredibly true and struck a chord with me. It's so difficult to explain a true passion to someone that doesn't have one. Quilts are always on my mind! :-)

There's a New Girl in Town!


A new Tiny Annie arrived a few weeks ago and I failed to share her with the world. She's tiny, adorable and quite cute!

I've had some busy days and while I don't feel that I've accomplished much I actually have!

I've been doing a block swap with four blogging buddies and I'd gotten behind - sigh! LOL So, I whipped up the blocks for June, July and August! (basically, late, on time and early). teehee! August is our final month so I'm officially done. They are packaged up and ready to go to the post office today!

I finally packaged up the Pay It Forward gifts for Nan, Linda and Sara - ladies watch your mailboxes!

My list of promises and obligations is still quite long but I'm moving right along!

My sister is coming today for two weeks but she'll probably spend more time with my DD and her boys (Eli and Seth) than she will with us. She's 16 years younger than me but only 5 years older than my DD so they have more to share!

I hope you have a wonderful Monday! Hopefully I'll have something quilty to show you in a day or two - tomorrow and Wednesday appear to be free days for me. :-)

Something Accomplished! :-)

Lest you think I've been wasting time - here's little cutie all quilted and will be on it's way to a friend very soon. Since I took the picture earlier this afternoon I've finished the binding - so it's completely finished!

Almost seems a little unfair to count these last four little finishes as finishes in my "Finish Five in July" challenge but I guess technically they are finishes. I'll get back to larger flimsies in the next day or two. So stay tuned.

Oh My!

Two free days to play and I can't figure out what to do! Sigh!!!!! LOL

I sat down at my sewing machine and attempted to work on a SUPER simple project and now I need to call out my buddy Jack the Ripper - grrrrr!!!! Thimbles, Joy & Miss Millie were snickering and giggling at me and one of them said "step away from the machine". LOL

I've finished binding my three Pay It Forward gifts - time to visit the post office.

I need to finish gathering goodies and treasures for The Cupcake Swap but I'm waiting for the mailman to bring a piece of fabric.

I obligated myself for 6 more PIF gifts and I can't decide how to handle those. I don't want to post a Pay It Forward because I don't want anyone to have to obligate themselves to something. Any ideas or thoughts????

Maybe I need to just walk out of my sewing room and find something else to do. Sigh!

Paying It Forward

Last July three (Nan, Linda & Sara) signed up for my Pay It Forward announcement and they have been patiently waiting. :-) I spent yesterday late afternoon and evening quilting these three little quilts. Last night I sewed down the binding on one while watching Animal Planet with my DH and plan to have the other two done by mid-week and all three in the mail by the end of the week. WooHoo!

Fun Mail and Finish #3!!!!!!

My mailbox has been overflowing with goodness this week - I really feel loved.



First a package arrived from Pam in British Columbia. That beautiful bag was stuffed with all the goodness you see around it. The tin full of chocolates, the 30's fat quarters, the book to hopefully help me learn how to handquilt and sweet notecard. All this just say thank you for being a blogging friend - Pam thank you for being such a sweetie and for your generosity. I appreciate you and your friendship!

Allow me to introduce you to Miss Milly! Isn't she the cutest? She arrived from Lorraine in Australia and she brought along the sweetest pincushion. This was part of the pincushion swap on Linda's blog. I'm already a little concerned because Miss Milly has already become fast friends with Thimbles and Joy - I think they've all started plotting. LOL Lorraine, thank you so much for your kindness, thoughtful and generosity. I'm really touched.

Last but not least - finish number three for Peg's "Finish Five in July" Challenge. This is a pattern called Night and Noon but I don't know who it's by - I took it as a class last year at one of the local quilt stores. Most of the fabric is from April Cornell's line called Sunshine.

Habit Forming!

How many times do you have to do something before it becomes a habit? Here's my second finish for the "Finish Five in July" Challenge and I'm hoping this will become a habit. LOL

This one is called "Graham Crackers" and I used charm packs from Poetry Collection by April Cornell/Moda. I've sewn the binding on and soon I'll have it sewn down. WooHoo!

Today I finished quilting the first of my "Finish Five in July" challenge. Can I please get a WOOOOOOOO-HOOOOOOOO, please?

I do need to sit and sew down the binding later this evening but I hope this will count as a 'finish' anyway.

I used several charm packs to make this cutie and it was my own pattern idea. You might recall my 4 patch tutorial that I posted in Feb '07. (Linda, is this what you asked about?)

Decisions Made - Ready to Meet the Challenge!

You might recall that I've joined Peg's "Finish Five in July Challenge". It's already July 4th so it's time to get serious about this challenge - wouldn't you agree? :-)

The pile of flimsies is very large - six have been pulled and WILL be finished by the end of July! Yes, they will. LOL I'd like to quilt a few more but before I get too ambitious I need to start with these six - this might just get the quilting ball rolling.

Nan - She and Pinkie have been busy snapping pictures everywhere they go.
Libby - The Princess is back in the Kingdom - woohoo!
Carole - The renovations are going well in their home (Stephen has been busy) and she's been finishing lots of projects in anticipation of her new baby. :-)
Carol - She spent many happy days with Master Hampton and had a ton of fun.
Sharon - The birthday month has come to an end so she can stop celebrating. LOL She's been sewing up a storm - cute new projects.
Linda - Lots of stitching and sewing happening there and trying to keep us all on task with the pincushion swap.
Wendy - Completed school with flying colors and will hopefully now take a little time to relax and enjoy her needle and thread.
Judy - Still nursing her hands and arms - I hurt for her! Still not able to do any handwork but can sew for a bit on her sewing machine. :-)
Nanette - Shophopping with her daughter - lots of great inspiration in her area shops. Some place to visit. HMMM
Tammy - Daniel has graduated from high school (talk about a talented musician!)

Back at it!

I dropped my mom off at the airport this morning. She was here for two weeks and kept me busy and on the go - whew! :-) Now it's back to my regularly scheduled boring and quiet life.

Officially Done!


We noticed that Darlene has attempted to take credit for the wallhanging WE made for her blogiversary give away. Don't you dare believe her - we made this cutie. And, guess what????? It's going in the mail to Nanette today! WooHoo

Sadly this cutie is missing an important element :-( There's suppose to be a blue ruffle (like the blue yo-yos) running down the center of each outer border - we don't do ruffles. We're going to include the strips of fabric so if Nanette wants to add the sweet ruffles she can.

We can take credit for the sewing/quilting but the pattern is a creation by Elizabeth of Late Bloomer Quilts and it's called Charming Gatherings. Go visit Elizabeth and tell her we sent ya. :-) (we're not sure she visits this blog)



Look another container in Darlene's sewing room. We really like this one - cute Longaberger basket that perfectly holds her Triangles on a Roll.

Thimbles and Joy here! We've been surfing blogland - wow you guys are some kind of talented. Anyway, Paula at Coffee Time Quilt Studio has issued a challenge for all to show off unique storage containers used in and around your sewing room (or studio, if you prefer). So, we decided to play along and show you some of Darlene's things. She does love containers and such.

The following are two pictures of her Vera Bradley "jewelry tote" that she has used for a very long time as a "binding tote" - see her binding clips and such. The zippered pockets hold needles, threader, etc.

I'm Joy and I'm here to show you the large Whitman Sampler tin, Darlene uses to store her thread. Dagnabbit she ate all the chocolate.

One more! I'm Thimbles and I'm here to show you her wooden cutlery/napkin holder that she uses to corral a variety of stuff (scissors, ruler, sewing machine oil, lint brushes, pens, pencils, notepads, etc)

There are lots more interesting things so we'll be back later to show you some more.

AAARRRGGGHHHHH!!!!! :-(

I have a squillion - yes a squillion - patterns in plastic bags and I need some storage ideas. I've stored them in a variety of ways but nothing makes me happy.

The pile in the picture is just a drop in the bucket and I need help with storage! So, please tell me how you store your patterns!

Jelly Cakes and Fresh Squeezed! :-)

My friends went to Spring Market in Portland and when they returned they told me that they had purchased two Jelly Cakes (Jelly Roll and Layer Cake) for me but I'd have to wait for the crate to arrive. Then I had to wait for them to dig my Jelly Cakes out of the crate - I've been waiting ever so patiently and I got my hands on them today. WoooooooooooooooooHoooooooooooooo! These are Cotton Blossoms by Moda and mother and daughter design team Bonnie/Cotton Way and Camille/Thimble Blossoms. I'm one very excited woman!! LOL


And, I received my outer border fabric earlier this week so another finished flimsy. I know you're probably sick of seeing this one but it's Key Holes by Anka Treasures.

Last night I was stitching down the binding on a few treats and surprises for others and realized that I have not actually quilted one of my flimsies in quite a while. So, maybe it's time to stop piecing and think about quilting a flimsy or two or three. I have several new flimsies that I'm anxious to see quilted however I can think of quite a few 'golden oldies' that deserve to be quilted too. HMMM - this might deserve some serious consideration.

Done!

Second Hand Clothes by Bonnie Blue Quilts is officially a flimsy! WooHoo! I've had this on my living room floor all evening and as I walk through I keep expressing to my DH how much I love it. This belongs on the top of the "quilt now" pile but we all know how tall that pile is. LOL

Want Smores?

Last night I took a break from making yo-yos and decided to start this sweet project! The pattern is Baker's Square and the fabric is Smores both by Me and My Sister Designs and Moda. I love all the adorable rick-rack prints in this line of fabric.

My DD and her family enjoy decorating with snowmen during the holiday season so I think they should own and love this cutie!

Thimbles and Joy counted the yo-yos in the jar and the count was authenticated and verified by their DH (Devious Hero). We have a winner...................................................................

there were 140 yo-yos in the jar..................................without further ado the winner is........ drum roll please........Nanette at Freda's Hive (she's going to be stunned because she just celebrated a birthday and the fun continues). :-)

Here's a peek at the prize - of course it had to have yo-yos - LOL! I'll post a picture of the entire quilt when I have finished it. (I ran out of the blue fabric - grrr)

Two Years - Another Blogiversary!

I can hardly believe it - I've been blogging for two years! I can still remember sitting at my computer while recovering from major surgery and I discovered blogs! I thought I'd jump on the blogging bandwagon and it's been one incredible ride. Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!

A celebration means a giveaway - woohoo! Thimbles and Joy are super excited to be a part of this celebration and we hope you are too. :-)

So many have wondered what I was going to do with all the yo-yos I've been making recently - filling my jar and making plans. teehee!
