An Impasse
Scrap Jar Stars

I've been working diligently on my Scrap Jar Stars PKM project. I have to admit that every star I make becomes my favorite. LOL

I made huge faux pas and it's not like me - I'm terribly sorry! I did provide this information in the first post but failed to include it this time. :-(

This is a pattern designed by Amber at A Little Bit Biased
The block tutorial is here

I've reached an impasse and need YOUR help, please.

When I initially had this Plan B project I thought I'd make 25 blocks (5 x 5). Then as I was working out my math, etc I decided I had enough fabric to make 30 blocks (5 x 6). Here I have 20 blocks on my design wall (4 x 5) and I'm not sure I like this as a rectangular quilt. I do know I don't want to stop with just 20 blocks but I'm not sure if it should be 25 blocks or 30 blocks. Sigh - please tell me you do this! LOL

I have to share that Mr Daze loves this quilt (well, the blocks) and would prefer that it be a rectangular quilt but I'm waffling. LOL

Help me!!!!

Enjoy a pieceful day!

In Friendship!

Your scrap quilt is beautiful.

I do the same. I have a plan when I start but usually the quilt turns out quite different. Especialy th size is hard to plan.

I love it! Just my kind of quilt, all scrappy. I'd suggest 25 blocks.

Yes, I do this, and I always plan big. Then about 2/3 of the way through...I think...enough is enough! Love your quilt!!

Love it! I need to go rectangular...I always like longer quilts...better for me to snuggle in

I love the colors! If I were you, I'd go with the original plan of 25 blocks and use the leftovers for a couple of little projects.

I'm going to say 25 blocks...but I have to qualify that with the info. that I'm really drawn to square quilts lately!

Ok my 2 cents worth is for a square quilt -5 x 5 blocks. But any size will be beautiful!

I say go longer to cover toes on chilly evenings. It's a beauty and on my list now!

I tend to go rectangular. It will be gorgeous either way.

I love this quilt...it is on my to-do list. I prefer rectangular quilts myself unless it is a wall hanging.

Go for 30. It would look great as a big square. :)

I have a lot of blog reading to catch up on but I say 25! It's a lovely top so far.

I think it's beautiful as is!
I always struggle with how big to make it and how much fabric is there. Inevitably I decide to make it bigger and run out of fabric! LOL
I prefer a rectangular quilt (4 or 5 blocks across and 6 or 7 down) for snuggling under, but if it's a wall quilt, then 25 blocks is also good.

Two can snuggle under a big enough square. Oh I don't know, I run into this sort of problem all the time. All I can say is I love the squares and I've done that before where I think each new block is my favorite. Those are the best quilts!

I see lots of square quilt lovers on the lise, but I really love a rectangle. They're really fantastic blocks and I love how this is turning out!!!

Oh dear -- yet another fun project to add to my bucket list. The list is definitely overflowing.
I really like the fabrics you're using. It looks so crisp and fresh.

I'm a rectangular quilt gal -- always. I want them ready to be grabbed and used, no questions about whether it's made to cover chin--> feet.

I prefer rectangular quilts just because there is enough to tuck under the end of the bed. The blocks are really pretty.

I like squares for wall hangings and rectangles for beds. I'd go for 30 if you love making them!

nlcalendar said...

I love your quilt...longer would be my preference, I like tucking the quilt around the pillows.

I would go 5 x 5 for 25 blocks. The square size of the quilt perfectly suits the square blocks and the secondary design. Besides, what do men know?

Christine M said...

You could do the 25 blocks and then have another look at it. Then decide whether or not to add the extra five. Your quilt is looking fantastic!

I'd do 30, 5x6. Use up all that fabric so there are no scraps to deal with! :)

Hey darlene! how are you? I go for rectangle quilts. love lap size!!! just to let you know I fell in love with your red and white star quilt. LOVE IT!!! I want to do that quilt in my redwork group down at the oasis. I want to put embroidery in the middle of the stars. hope that is ok. it made my heart beat faster. this one does too, but nothing beats a red and white quilt! hugs!!!

30 blocks--if the hubs likes it then it need to be on the longer size.

Rectangular gets my vote but no matter which way you go, it'll be a winner.

Great job, my friend!

Well Sweet Darlene, Your asking the wrong person when I answer this question...you see, I love rectangle quilts. I'm fairly tall 5'9" and when I snuggle down in a quilt, I want to be able to tuck it under my feet and over my shoulders, and still have room to move. So if I was making this beauty (and it is absolutely gorgeous), I would go with the 5 by 6, or, depending on the size of each block however many it took to keep that pretty rectangle shape. I love square quilts too, but they have to be really big for me to use them. I also have a daughter that is 6' tall and her 13 year old daughter is already 5'6", soooooo. I'm sure you can understand where my preference comes from. Now...back to the quilt itself. Did you design this pattern or is it one that is available for everyone. I really do love it. Big hugs my Wonder Quilter...

It wouldn't bother me at all to have it be rectangular. In fact, I think mine IS rectangular! I love your color combination. I say go for the bigger size.

It is really really pretty! I can see how each block becomes a new favorite :)

Rectangular quilts are what I prefer, but if the symmetrical setting is what pleases your eye, I say go for square! then you never have the quilt upside down or sideways no matter which way it is over you or a sofa :)

I LOVE this Darlene - and yes, I do the same thing, lol. I do prefer longer quilts, rather than square, they're just easier to wrap around me. But if I keep eating ice cream to cool off, they'll need to be HUGE squares....

Kigwit said...

Gorgeous! But I think I would go for 25. I think this quilt wants to be square.

evelyn said...

You love the blocks. Try making 30. Then you can look at your design wall with 25, and with 30. If you decide on square, you can always use the extras for a runner. Or maybe make 36. Gee, I guess I'm no help. I Love the blocks, no matter how many.

Cathy said...

I don't see a problem with the quilt being rectangualr. What size would you get most use out of?

Something that occurred to me, though, is that I would try leaving out the small squares in the corners of the blocks for just the outer edges of the blocks that will be on the outer edge of quilt, so the secondary design (9 patch blocks) will be only in the center of the quilt and you don't have the partial 9-patches on the edges. Just a thought.

Stop stop stop - you are tempting me. This is the very cutest quilt EVER! And I have tons of 30s fabrics to make it in - ohhh what shall I do?

I had 9 UFOs and I've been working like crazy to get them all finished - I just have the swags to finish on a border of a tone-on-tone Dresden plate quilt and all will be done - and I'll have no UFOs - and I vowed NO NEW PROJECTS - and then you show me this one.

I too make decisions and change them - rectangle? square? rectangle? Sometimes as far into the project as putting the blocks together. I sort of prefer square quilts as they fit the way I want them to on my bed - hang over the end and sides and just slip under the pillow - so IF I make this - you heard me IF IF IF IF - it will be square.

Hi to those wascally wabbits.

Your blocks are beautiful!! I like both shapes of quilts...my last one was square...the one before was rectangular. Good luck deciding! :0)

Cheryl said...

I LOVE THIS QUILT!!!!! I'm thinking 25 blocks, but any way you put it together would be wonderful!

Deanna said...

If you have the fabric, make the squares. 30 blocks won't be too oppressive when working with such lovely fabric. How big a quilt will that make?

Janet said...

I love your quilt! Since you're having such a great time making them, why not go a little bigger?

Cheryl said...

I am sure you have already answered your question. Great quilt!!

QuiltNut Creations said...

It's beautiful!! How many blocks did you decide to do?

Carrie said...

I think you should make everybody happy and make two quilts - one square and one rectangular. One for you and one for Mr. Daze.

And each one should have at least ten rows of ten blocks each. So 100 blocks for the square quilt and 110 blocks for the rectangular quilt... maybe even 120 blocks. Yeah, that would work. I think that's what you should do. :)

Go for it, make more and if you don't like that many, you can make a topper or baby quilt. LOVE your fabric choice!
